Below is a list of project updates on Covington roadwork and infrastructure projects. For any additional information or questions please contact the Covington Engineering Department at 859.292.2112.
Riverfront Commons
Project: This project will improve the Covington's Riverfront along the Ohio River from the base of Greenup Street, west to Route 8.
Status: The City was awarded $3.9 million in grant funds to put towards the project. The design plans are currently being reviewed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The City is also working with design consultants to determine what other amenities can be incorporated into the design or planned for at a later date. The Western Walk from Madison Avenue heading west will begin construction in early 2016. This will include a path that will go up and over the levee and tie into the sidewalk near the east side of the Brent Spence Bridge.
Licking River Levee Stabilization
Project: The City has been monitoring a landslide along the Licking River Levee near the dead end section of 21st Street.
Status: Geo Solutions was hired to stabilize the landslide. Work is about 80% complete and the levee will be fully stabilized by the end of the month. There will be a separate contract awarded to prepare the final grade work, install some drainage pipes, and restore the walking path on top of the levee.
6th St. and Scott Blvd. Gateway
Project: This project will create a gateway at 6th St. and Scott Blvd. to both Madison Ave. and Mainstrasse. Elements of the project will include underground utilities, decorative street lighting, new sidewalks with pavers along the curb line, and mast arm traffic signals.
Status: Design plans are 95% complete and the goal is to have them ready by the end of the month so that the project can go to construction this spring.
Riverside Drive
Project: Roadway and sidewalk stabilization.
Status: Design work has been completed. Plans need to be approved by the United States Army Corps of Engineers and will then be ready to go out to bid for construction.
Highway Avenue Fence
Project: The chain link fence along the north side of Highway Avenue will be replaced with a decorative fence and the sidewalk will be extended to tie in with Riverfront Commons.
Status: The City is soliciting quotes for the design work that will be needed.
Annual Resurfacing
Project: The City is divided into 3 geographic areas. Each year, streets are prioritized in the area of focus based on the pavement rating, the amount of traffic, and coordination with the various underground utility companies. As part of this work, the corresponding curb ramps are also replaced to bring them up to current ADA standards.
Status: The City is in area 3 of the 3 year paving rotation. The areas that are eligible are in the Latonia area and half of South Covington. Work is scheduled to begin as soon as the asphalt plants open in the spring and will be completed by June.
MainStrasse Parking Program
Project: A new parking plan for MainStrasse that includes on street pay stations, parking fees for the lots, and an on street residential parking program.
Status: Pay stations and signage are currently being installed. The plan is set to begin the middle of March.
North Covington Sidewalks
Project: Following the sidewalk replacement projects that were done in Latonia and South Covington, the City will be replacing the worst sections of sidewalks along the most heavily traveled areas in the northern part of the City.
Status: A complete inventory was taken. Work will begin next month with the removal of all trip hazards over 0.75 inches.
Rivercenter Blvd. Reconstruction
Project: The City received an 80/20 matching grant from OKI for street resurfacing and other improvements to 1100 feet of Rivercenter Blvd. from West 3rd St. toward Madison Ave. Improvements include new pedestrian lighting, widening of sidewalks, and landscaping.
Status: Design work is set to begin this spring. Construction will begin next year at this time at the very latest.
Latonia Avenue Reconstruction
Project: The City received an 80/20 matching grant from OKI for street and sidewalk reconstruction of Latonia Ave. from Southern Ave. to just east of West 36th St.
Status: Design work is set to begin this spring. Construction on both will begin next year at this time at the very latest.
