Covington Promotes Environmentally Friendly Initiatives; Issues 2016-2017 Green Stickers to Property Owners

COVINGTON, KY – The City of Covington will be issuing 2016-2017 green stickers to property owners as it continues its Waste & Recycling Program initiatives.

In July 2015, the City partnered with Keep Covington Beautiful and Rumpke Waste & Recycling to promote stewardship in the community and the environment through ongoing efforts to keep the City clean, healthy and green.

Through its partnerships, the City adopted the Waste & Recycling Program and the Green Sticker Program with the mission to keep neighborhoods, City streets and sidewalks clean and promote the reduction, recycling and reuse of materials.

Covington provides single family property owners as well as multi-family property owners with less than five units, 12 green stickers annually. Stickers are mailed to the property owners. Renters should contact their landlord if they are in need of a sticker to set out large items.

The 2016-2017 green stickers will be in mailboxes by the end of September/early October. Please reference the green sticker for more information regarding the program’s guidelines. Additional green stickers can be purchased at City Hall located at 20 West Pike Street, Covington, KY 41011.

Over the last year, the City has seen a drop in reported residential trash setout complaints and an increase in the demand for alternative disposal resources and recycling.

Solid Waste Coordinator Sheila Fields stated, “These programs provide much needed education and are important to the positive growth of our City.  A healthy, clean, green and beautiful city is a place where people want to live, work and play. We all need to do our part, and through these programs, we are taking responsibility to ensure our city is cleaner and greener.”

In recent years, it was common to see unwanted piles of bulk debris, household furniture, and loose trash placed in front of residential properties. The improper and unsightly trash setouts created health and safety hazards for neighbors while diminishing the beauty and charm of the City’s neighborhoods leading to decreased property values.

Fields stated, “Some setouts would sit on the curb for weeks. With the implementation of the volume based Waste & Recycling Program, property owners and residents now have a guide to assist them with proper waste management.”

The Waste & Recycling Program focuses on trash, recycling and bulk item disposal. Trash and recycling carts are available to property owners in various sizes and quantities. All trash and debris is required to be placed in the City issued cart and any items that do not fit in the cart require a green sticker.

New this year, property owners will also receive a Waste & Recycling informational brochure. The brochure gives a detailed overview of trash and recycling collection guidelines while encouraging residents to do their part, and use their City issued cart. It also provides information for alternative disposal services offered to Covington residents.
