COVINGTON, KY – On Tuesday evening, the Board of Commissioners authorized the retirement of Captain Amanda Donelan and Sergeant Wes Cook, thanking each of them for over 20 years of service with the Covington Police Department. Additionally, the Board of Commissioners approved four promotions within the department.
Capt. Donelan and Sgt. Cook’s retirements will be in effect October 1, 2017.
Chief of Police Robert Nader stated, “Best wishes to Amanda and Wes on their retirements. We thank them for their many years of dedicated service to the City of Covington.
“Congratulations to those promoted, they have worked hard for this next step in their careers and I am sure they will be as successful in their new positions as they were in their previous assignments."
Captain Donelan completed 21 years of service with the Covington Police Department. She led a reputable career where she served as a Patrol Officer, Patrol Supervisor, Detective Sergeant, Patrol Sergeant, Patrol Lieutenant, Administrative Captain, Detective Captain and Patrol Captain.
Capt. Donelan stated, “I appreciate the years of professional, academic and personal growth that the City of Covington, the Police Department and the FOP have facilitated for me. I value all the connections I was able to make, locally and internationally, because of the trust invested in me.
“Please know that those being promoted have all the same advantages and opportunities. They are already great officers and are growing into great leaders.”
Sgt. Wes Cook completed 22 years of service with the Covington Police Department. He led a distinguished career where he served a Patrol Officer, Bike Patrol Officer, Patrol Sergeant and Traffic Unit Supervisor.
Sgt. Cook stated, “It’s been a great 22 years with the Covington Police Department and it’s tough to leave. I’ve worked with a tremendous group of officers and it’s been a great career.”
Upon the retirement of Capt. Donelan and Sgt. Cook, vacancies were created within the Police Department. As a result, the four following promotions have been authorized to occur, effective October 1, 2017:
- Promotion of Lieutenant William Kelley to the rank of Captain
- Promotion of Sergeant Matthew Winship to the rank of Lieutenant
- Promotion of Officer Donald Strange to the rank of Sergeant
- Promotion of Officer Daniel Mitchell to the rank of Sergeant
In accordance with the working agreement between the City of Covington and the Covington Fraternal Order of Police #1, the Chief of Police recommends that all vacancies created by retirements are to be filled.
Officers were selected for their promotion from the 2017 Promotion Eligibility List established and governed by the Covington Police and Fire Board.
