COVINGTON, Ky. - The addition of three teams to the league roster this week means the Covington Adult Softball League will begin play on May 17 with a full season of games.
The season was in danger of being canceled because too few teams had signed up (a problem that leagues across the nation are facing) - but Covington Parks, Recreation & Facilities officials extended the deadline and put out yet another last-minute plea this week.
“It worked,” Parks & Recreation Director Rosie Santos said. “We now have nine teams playing, and we’re pretty happy about it. Over the years we’ve found that a lot of teams treat game night as an excuse to bring their families and share food and the family friendly atmosphere.”
Barring any weather-related complications, the regular season will last 12 games and wrap up play Aug. 23 a single-elimination tournament.
League and tournament winners earn plaques, T-shirts and bragging rights. Given that the Covington Adult League has been in existence for at least 50 years and probably much longer, those “rights” are held in high regard, Santos said.
The games are played Thursday nights at Bill Cappel Youth Sports Complex at 4305 Decoursey Ave. in Covington.
