Work on a new storm sewer at 33rd Street and Latonia Avenue this morning signaled the beginning of Phase 2 of the reconstruction of Latonia Avenue.
COVINGTON, Ky. - The second half of the long-awaited reconstruction of Latonia Avenue began this morning.
Work began at the corner of 33rd Street and Latonia Avenue, where Riegler Construction is installing a new storm sewer in coordination with Sanitation District No. 1 of Northern Kentucky.
Drivers in the area will notice traffic restrictions and should expect those going forward as the $631,000 project proceeds toward its expected completion late this year.
"This is it - work is now under way on what has been one of our top priorities over the last few years," said Rick Davis, interim Public Works Director for Covington. "We appreciate the patience of neighbors and drivers in the months ahead. The repaired road will be worth the temporary inconvenience."
Almost 4,100 cars a day travel on the street, which connects Madison Pike and Winston Avenue through the West Latonia neighborhood.
The road surface has gradually deteriorated because of erosion below the surface, aging asphalt and the scars of a water line-replacement project.
The first phase of the reconstruction - from Madison Pike to West Southern Avenue and around the corner on Southern down to Mabel Avenue - was finished in 2015. This second phase will rebuild Latonia Avenue from West Southern to a point 166 feet south of West 35th Street, in front of Kelly Bros. Home & Design Center.
Weather delayed the start by a couple of weeks. The previous schedule called for work to finish by Oct. 30.
The City Commission voted to allocate road money to complete the Latonia Avenue project when it approved the Fiscal Year 2018 budget and last month approved Riegler as the contractor.
The final project will include a total curb-to-curb reconstruction, new water lines (already installed) and a separation of the problematic combined sewer system. The existing sewer will be used only for sanitary sewage, and a new network for storm water will be installed.
