Big Cuz, fried fish & Derby Does Drag

COVINGTON, Ky. - Thanksgiving has turkey and stuffing. Valentine’s Day its iconic candy hearts. New Year’s Day has its pork and sauerkraut (Covington’s German roots talking), and the 4th of July its deer burgers and goetta ’dogs (personal favorites).

And of course Easter has its Pappas eggs (you thought we were going to write “colored hard-boiled eggs,” but we’re continuing the Covington theme, you know, and oh those Opera Creams).

But no season is so closely associated with food as Lent.

Meaning, it’s fish fry time, everyone.

We have some recommendations below, but if you’re looking to get out in LoveTheCov this weekend, you also will want to know about the Black-n-Bluegrass Rollergirls event ... the NWF pro wrestling extravaganza ... the new beverage at Braxton ... NKY Restoration Weekend and lots of live tunes.

Fish fish fish fish fish fish
Across the region, the bubbling sound you will hear Friday evening is that of fillets frying (we have no idea what sound baking fish makes).

In Covington, the Roman Catholics are leading the charge, with weekly fish fries at:
  • Holy Cross in Latonia, HERE.
  • Prince of Peace in Lewisburg, HERE.
  • And St. Augustine in Peaselburg, HERE
There’s also one held by the Covington Professional Firefighters Local 38, HERE.

(Roller) Derby Does Drag
This one comes courtesy of the Black-n-Bluegrass Rollergirls, the behind-kickers at Northern Kentucky’s roller derby team. (For the uninitiated, roller derby is a marriage of rugby and chess, on wheels).

The team is hosting the 8th Annual: Derby Does Drag event on Saturday at Molly Malone’s, meaning that, yep, BBRG athletes and their guests will be performing as Kings and Queens.

But it’s a fund-raiser, so it’s all good. Info, HERE.

Rehabbing that ‘white elephant’
OK, so technically this event is in Newport.

But given the sheer number of historic buildings in Covington (commercial and residential galore), and Covington’s involvement with this event, the NKY Restoration Weekend 2019 convention/workshop on Saturday is timely, relevant, and full of advice and help for rehabbers and other owners of old buildings.

Warning: Free, but you SHOULD register for classes. (This thing is popular.)

Info, HERE.

Give him the chair!
The lineup in the tag team match alone should grab your attention: It’s Men of Brutality with 7-foot-1 Big Cuz vs. Mr. Golden Ticket and The Titan.

If not, there’s the ladies match of Nikki Victory v. Ella, and Pompano Joe vs. Austin Tyler Morris.

Yes, it’s a whole card of family-friendly action from the Northern Wrestling Federation, coming Saturday to Hits Indoor Baseball and Sportsplex. Info, HERE.

Braxton does it again
What did we say last weekend? (Something about it wouldn’t be a weekend in Covington without Braxton Brewing Co. unveiling a new beverage?)

This weekend, Braxton is throwing a weekend-long party to unveil VIVE, its new hard seltzer, i.e. spiked sparkling water, made right here in Covington.

A DJ on Friday night, a rhythmic workout class in the loft on Saturday morning, and live music Saturday night. Info, HERE.

Year-round Farmers Market
This Saturday, wares include baked goods, meats and eggs, unique rubs and spices, prepared soups and salads, natural body products, cold-pressed juices, and more.

Check it all out - plus your Covington Farmers Market swag - 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Smoke Justis. Info, HERE.

Turning a little soil II
Yeah, tonight’s weather forecast says otherwise, but spring is getting ready to be sprung, sort of.

Last Saturday was the first work day at Redden Gardens; this Saturday is the second.

Redden is an allotment garden in the Eastside neighborhood, with plots for rent and (some) food (planted outside the fence) for the picking. This week’s agenda: more work on the pollinator garden and widening the sidewalk.

Info, HERE.

Live music
On Friday, there’s Dr. Dog w/ The Nude Party at Madison Theater, HERE ... Consider the Source w/ Strange Mechanics at Madison Live, HERE ... Push Play at The Globe, HERE... Friday Night Live w/ Ryan McKenzie at Zazou Covington, HERE ... Basic Truth at the Fifth Lounge, HERE ... Rucca at Mac’s Pizza, HERE ... and Roger Drawdy at Molly Malone’s, HERE.
