COVINGTON, Ky. - The deadline for teams to register for Covington’s Adult Softball League has been extended until May 3 as a last-chance effort to keep the season alive.
“Participation in adult softball in Covington - just like across the country - has been steadily declining for years,” City Parks & Recreation Manager Rosie Santos said. “Last year we got an influx of teams at the last second; we’ll wait and see what happens this year.”
Only two teams have registered so far. The league needs a minimum of eight teams to register and pay league fees by May 3. With play expected to start May 13, it’s the last time the deadline can be extended, Santos said.
The Covington Adult Softball League has been in existence for at least 50 years and probably much longer, Santos said.
Games are played Thursday nights at Bill Cappel Youth Sports Complex at 4305 Decoursey Ave.
Teams are co-ed. Players do not have to live in Covington but have to be at least 18 years old.
The team entry fee is $415, and the season includes 12 games and a single-elimination tournament. It runs May 13 through Aug. 7, depending upon the weather. Each team also pays a $15 cash umpire fee per game, but there are no gate entrance fees. Softballs and bases are provided by the league.
