COVINGTON, Ky. - A day after Sunday’s “decommissioning” event, the developers of the planned John R. Green Lofts project presented the City of Covington with a framed photograph of the mural that will be lost to the new development.
The mural, titled “An Epic of Time and Town,” was designed by Christian Schmit and painted in summer 2009 by a team of about 10 artists from ArtWorks. It depicts people and places in Covington.
The decommissioning event gave the chance for the community to say “good-bye” to the mural and included speakers, commemorative items, and mural-related activities for children.
When finished, the project - on the site of the historic John R. Green building on W. Sixth Street in MainStrasse Village - will include 177 apartments, 11,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, and a neighborhood market.
The primary John R. Green building will be saved and renovated, while the addition on which the mural is painted will be demolished, officials from developer RealtyLink said.
