COVINGTON, Ky. - Two years ago, the grand re-opening of Covington’s Father Hanses Park celebrated the completed first phase of several rounds of improvements, including new playground equipment, a basketball court, benches, and a picnic table.

This weekend, the park in Lewisburg is getting another colorful addition: a large peace sign, made out of mosaic tile.

Local artist Ximena Flores created the mural and is installing it today and Saturday. On Sunday, the neighborhood is sponsoring a get-together at the park from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. to showcase the design - which includes the words “Paz Peace Pax” - and invite neighbors to further contribute their creativity.

Last fall, Flores worked with neighbors on the design, and they helped break the tile pieces. Sunday, they will have the opportunity to design and make new 8-inch-square mosaics out of broken tile to be added underneath the design, said Shannon Ratterman, program manager for community development at The Center for Great Neighborhoods.

The Center funded the project through a Creative Community Grant.

“Father Hanses Park has come a long way,” Ratterman said. “It went from essentially an empty space a few years ago to becoming a vibrant, happening place that makes the neighborhood special.”
