Former Covington Mayor Butch Callery and his wife, Joyce.
COVINGTON, Ky. - The City of Covington officially offers its condolences to former Mayor Butch Callery, the entire Callery family, and the Covington community on the death of the former Mayor's wife, Joyce Callery.
Joyce Callery died Saturday at age 72 after enduring a heart attack earlier in the week.
Butch Callery served on the Covington City Commission from 1980 through 2000 and was Mayor from 2001 through 2008. He was also Villa Hills' mayor from 2015 through 2018.
He and Joyce were married just two days shy of 52 years.
"We in Covington appreciate not only Butch's service but Joyce's as well," Mayor Joe Meyer said. "Elected officials are often in the limelight, but their spouses usually aren't. Yet none of us could do what we do without the love, support, and sacrifice of our family members. As Butch said the other day, Joyce was 'a great companion.' "
Joyce Callery also was a behind-the-scenes leader in her own right, Meyer said. An avid golfer, in 2005 she helped organize the first local Rally for a Cure golf outing to raise money for breast cancer research, an outing that continues today to benefit the local affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Joyce and Butch have four kids, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
