Indie films, ardent art & ‘Jenny Savage’

COVINGTON, Ky. - Mid-August. The dog days. The doldrums.

... but not in Love The Cov, where everybody from blood-thirsty MMA fanatics to art aficionados (and yes, sometimes those are the same people) can find something to do.

BCM music TONIGHT
It’s our weekly “better hurry” item: Music@BCM is tonight, and it features Ramona Blaine and The Company, touted by organizers as “one of the most in-demand bands in the area ... (bringing) the best dance music of the past four decades.”

“Doors” opened at 6, tunes start at 7.

Lil’s features FreshLo chef
Do you like “savory summery plates of deliciousness?”

Come getcha some Friday night in the outdoor event area of Lil’s Bagels during its R&B Outdoor Happy Hour, when the FreshLo Chef Fellowship Pop-Up Take-Over series features guest chef Shannon Glover of Legendary Eatz.

FreshLo is a really cool program from The Center for Great Neighborhoods of Covington that gives “a hand up and a push forward” to people trying to start or grow their own food-based business. In other words, this is worth checking out.

Mingle w/ the indie film folk
You might have heard of Cindependent Film Festival, which as the name implies is a 3-day celebration of almost 100 indie films and screenplays coming up in Over-the-Rhine across the Ohio River at the end of the month.

If you want to mingle with festival staff and film industry folks, come to Hotel Covington on Sunday afternoon for Cindependent Out & About (bunch and drinks). This is your chance to learn more about the festival, buy tickets and more.

‘Subverts the male gaze’
Want to see (and buy) one-of-a-kind attention-grabbing art from two Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center artists in residence?

Go to Hotel Covington’s EYES UP: An Art Pop-up Shop on Saturday and Sunday. We’re not art critics (we’re more like: “what pretty colors” ... “that looks pretty sweet”) so we’re going to let others speak for us:

“Kelsey Linder ... explores the ideas of pleasure and stimulation ... creates portals that collectively illustrate a Utopia for all ... subverts the male gaze ... reclaims this space with an explosion of vibrant spontaneity and meticulous detail to celebrate bodies as they are ...”

“Richie Gould ... works to suspend the viewer between the possible and impossible ... weaves an open dialogue about the human condition ... strike up a plane of speculation.”

Get the picture(s)? ... Tickets and info, HERE.

Green Day, again
Green Day is returning to Covington for a second weekend. Again, not the band but the band’s music.

A two-time Tony Award-winning musical - based on the band’s Grammy Award-winning multi-platinum album “American Idiot” - has kicked off the 2019-20 theatre season at The Carnegie.

The high-energy rock opera follows three disaffected young men living in suburbia who have dreams of a different life in the city. (Warning: Adult themes and lyrics.) And yeah, you’ll recognize the tunes.

For info and tickets to shows Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoon, HERE.

Armbars & takedown defense
In the classroom, Jennifer Clausius is working on a bachelor’s degree in business management. In the ring, she’s a professional strawweight, the MMA fighter “Macho Miss Jenny Savage.”

And Saturday evening, she’ll glove up vs. Yoko Kowaas at Hits Entertainment Complex as the headliner in Premier MMA Championship 13.

Come watch the up-and-coming stars of MMA. Also on the card: Alannah Arnett vs. Kelsey Hildal for the Premier MMA female strawweight championship ... lightweight champion Ilyaz Mamadaliyev of Dayton, OH, taking on welterweight Doug Davidson ... and the return of pro fighter Scott Cornwell vs. Charles Stanford.

Weigh-ins are Friday, the fights are Saturday. Tickets and info, HERE.
