Salmons 'obvious, best' choice for assistant chief
COVINGTON, Ky. - Covington has a new assistant fire chief, and he's a familiar face.
During Greg Salmons' 15 years with Covington's Fire Department, he has helped streamline and strengthen the fire inspection process, lobbied for a tougher statewide response to the heroin crisis, obtained a federal grant to fund a new rescue boat, and helped put together a program to train bystanders to save lives by treating wounds.
At the recommendation of Fire Chief Mark Pierce, the Covington Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday night to promote Salmons from the rank of "captain" to "assistant chief of fire prevention and public education," filling the post left vacant with the retirement of Chris Kiely three weeks ago.
At the meeting, Pierce praised Salmons and talked about his work as a liaison to federal and state agencies.
"He was the obvious choice and the best choice," Pierce said. "He worked closely with Chief Kiely and gave me a letter of intent with his plans for the position."
In brief remarks, Salmons thanked Chief Pierce for "his confidence in me," the Commission for the opportunity, and his family for their support
His promotion is effective as of today.
Also Tuesday: the City Commission:
- Promoted Lt. Kyle Simpson to replace Salmons as captain. Simpson has been with the City for eight years.
- Promoted firefighter/paramedic Dennis Hoyle to replace Simpson as lieutenant. Hoyle has been with the City for over nine years.
