Our cup runneth over (with this news)

(EDITOR'S NOTE: This is another in a series of recycling tips from the City of Covington's Neighborhood Services Department, Solid Waste & Recycling Division.)

COVINGTON, Ky. – Cue up Anna Kendrick’s “Cups” song and grab a plastic container to “pop” on the table, because today’s recycling tip isn’t just a helpful reminder but God’s-honest-truth breaking news:

You can now recycle “cups” in the City of Covington.

Thanks to changes at Rumpke Waste & Recycling’s facility, you can toss those disposable drink containers into your curbside recycling bin, rather than the trash.

We’re talking clear plastic cups, paper cups with plastic coating, and aluminum cups. This means most to-go drink containers from fast-food restaurants (soft drinks, iced tea, coffee, and milk shakes) … as well as those from coffee shops … plastic souvenir cups … plus the little Dixie-brand cups often used near water coolers or in bathrooms.

Note it does NOT mean K-Cups, Styrofoam cups, Solo cups (red or otherwise) and other colored plastic cups, glass cups, and ceramic mugs.

There are just a few rules:

  • Rinse out the cups.
  • Do NOT stack them together.
  • Throw away the straws.
  • And do one of two things with the lids: If it’s a “paper” cup with a plastic lid, throw the lid away. But if it’s a plastic lid on a plastic cup (like those clear plastic things you get a cold coffee-flavored beverage in) then reattach the lid and throw both in the recycling cart.

Note also that the number on the bottom of the cup has no bearing on whether it can be recycled.

Yes, this is big news for recycling fans.
