Hail to the resilient bamboo plant

(EDITOR'S NOTE: This is another in a series of recycling tips from the City of Covington's Neighborhood Services Department, Solid Waste & Recycling Division.)

COVINGTON, Ky. – Here’s a new and sustainable way to wipe up spills while also saving money:  Reusable paper towels made of bamboo.

If properly cared for (i.e. washed and dried), bamboo paper towels can be reused over 100 times per towel and remain absorbent the whole time.

As a plant, bamboo is a great renewable resource. It regenerates quickly, doesn’t require pesticides, and produces 35 percent more oxygen when compared to trees of the same size.

The towels come in rolls and can be bought at places like CVS Pharmacy, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Walmart. Make sure the packaging includes key words like “heavy duty,” “machine or hand washable,” and “reusable.”
