‘Black’ wines, Sara Mackie & Pysanka

COVINGTON, Ky. – The Super Bowl is over. Too soon for March Madness. Valentines’ Day came and went. The weather, in a word, is gloomy. The ground’s too frozen to till, and the water is too cold to paddle (for most of us).

However, there’s no need to despair at home.

Here in the The Cov, even a light weekend calendar has fun to be had, starting tonight:

'Black' vines

It was supposed to happen last week, but instead, Crafts & Wines will hold a wine tasting tonight.

In honor of Black History Month, the featured attraction is Longevity Wines of California, one of the participants in the 11th annual Black Vines Festival. And here’s another twist: C&V will also be pouring a taste from the first black-owned distillery in Kentucky, Bourgh Brothers Bourbon Whiskey.

As of “press time,” there were a few spots open for two seatings. Details HERE.

And while this isn’t an “event” per se, Ripple Wine Bar is featuring Chaos Theory, a red blend from Brown Estate Vineyards, in honor of Black History Month.

‘Cheaper than Therapy’

It’s billed as “a stroll through one actor/singer’s head,” and judging by the title “Cheaper than Therapy,” we’re having visions of T.S. Eliot, Dante, Pink Floyd, and Jake Speed*.

But whether the “intimate musical” on Saturday at Covington’s The Carnegie is a walk on the wild side or a stroll through a lyrical park, you’ll have to go listen for yourself.

It features Cincinnati-based performer Sara Mackie and pianist Matthew Umphreys, and production themes are for grown-ups, so no one under 13 admitted. And keep your fellow theatre patrons and staff safe by wearing your mask. Details HERE.

*Why the local mandolin man’s inclusion with the likes of “The Wall” and “The Waste Land?” Have you ever LISTENED to the lyrics of “A Midsummer’s Nightmare”?

Ode to an eggshell

Did you know that in Pysanka (aka Ukranian egg decorating), it’s not unusual to see scenes from everyday life drawn across an egg? Kind of like Keats’s “Ode to a Grecian Urn,” but on a chicken egg instead of a clay vessel.

Local artist Ivanka Lempitskiy is back with her workshop at Purple Paisley, Local Artisan Shop on Saturday, teaching this 2,000-year-old Ukranian egg painting tradition that celebrates the circle of life.

She’ll show you how to transform an empty, clean chicken egg into art using special tools and vegetable dyes. Details HERE.

Time for a shindig

Tell your BFFs it’s time to head over to Hat Tricks Sports Bar on Saturday afternoon for a Sexy Soul Sisters Shindig.

It’s a fun dance class celebrating good ol’ girlfriend fun. The bar will be open after that exercise class, so be ready to work that elbow and wrist as you lift those libations to your lips. More HERE
