Easter, Eilerman & Coconut Stout

COVINGTON, Ky. – Obviously, Sunday morning will be all about Easter services and brunches and egg searches and the like. The weather should be decent, and we have three pieces of advice: Bonnets are back … find every hard-boiled egg, lest that smell grow fairly foul come July … and, if you’re feeling lazy, check out some brunch opportunities in The Cov below.

(Oh, and if you need an earworm, google “easter bunny rapper’s delight.”)

Meanwhile, assuming the clouds clear out, here’s an event you can check out this weekend from the comfort of your own backyard, balcony, window, porch, or wherever you like to stand and gaze at the sky. The Full Pink Moon in Libra is happening on Saturday, and -- according to all the swamies and soothsayers – it’s going to offer you some much-needed grounding. But don’t go looking for a big pink orb. This full moon gets its name from the pink ground phlox which blooms in the spring.

Now, here’s our weekly list:

Oops, forgot the ham?

Your Easter plans need not be ruined by any small menu oversights because there are solutions to be found in The Cov. Coppin’s at Hotel Covington just might outdo your efforts in the kitchen, anyway (so let them).

On Sunday they’re serving up Glazed Pit Ham, omelets, and waffles made to order, roasted red potatoes, a smoked salmon display, fried chicken with hot honey, hashbrown casserole with cheddar and green onion, and oh so much more (like desserts). Find out how to book a table, HERE.

Or hop over to Keystone Bar & Grill for an “all-you-can-eat” Easter brunch buffet and Easter-themed cocktails (and mocktails). More HERE.

(And yes, we’re sure there are other options, but social media is failing us right now …)

A good and stout Friday

They don’t call it Good Friday for nothin’, friend.

Starting at 8 a.m. Friday, the Braxton Brewing Company is releasing MANTRA Toasted Coconut Stout, coupled with a Holtman’s Donut pop-up, and iced coffee on tap.

Pair your Toasted Coconut Stout with a chocolate toasted coconut or vanilla toasted coconut donut. Details HERE.

2-piece snack, extra crispy

Los Angeles-based toy maker and comic artist Scott Cherry had an idea for an experiment: He sculpted and sent out a Kentucky Colonel-style resin figure to more than 30 artists around the world with instructions to put their unique artistic touches on the figure.

Oh, and when we say, “Kentucky Colonel-style resin figure,” we mean as in Colonel Harlan Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken (and the icon of modern China, per a 2016 BBC report).

Had the artists ever even heard of Kentucky? (Well, the Beijing artist, sure). Were they aware of his revered status in the poultry industry? Had they ever furrowed their brow and wondered, “So just what are those 11 secret herbs and spices? And can you smoke them?”

Those answers may forever elude us, but what we can find out is how Cherry’s experiment played out.

On Friday, Earth to Kentucky hosts “The Colonel: A Group Art Show.” If you haven’t stopped in yet, this is a pretty cool reason for your inaugural visit, don’t you think? Details HERE.

Shin-guard season

Youth soccer is back starting Saturday, so be sure to sign up the kiddo(s), cut the oranges, dust off the lawn chairs, and fill the water bottles. (It’s your parental obligation.)

Covington Parks and Rec’s Covington Youth Soccer Program kicks off (literally) at Austinburg Park. In addition to signing up kids, sign yourself up as a volunteer coach. For the record, it’s for ages 4 to 7, and these are skills clinics more than league games. Details HERE.

Through Eilerman’s lens

Northern Kentucky, particularly Covington, as seen through photographer Chuck Eilerman’s lens, is a place both ethereal and brilliant.

The cornice of every structure, be it residential or commercial, a work of art. … Skies, whether day or night, richly luminous against a bridge, a familiar steeple, gargoyle, or historic rooftop. … And timeless neighborhoods glimpsed through branches and blooms. Eilerman has chronicled the character and evolution of the city.

See for yourself on Saturday at the Purple Paisley, Local Artisan Shop for Meet and Greet: Chuck Eilerman, Local Photographer. Details HERE.

(Chuck lets us share some of his photos on this page time to time, so we know firsthand of what we write.)

Ah, the bouquets

There’ll be all range of lovely bouquets on Saturday at Crafts & Vines when Scarlet Begonia’s Flower Truck shows up for a pop-up.

Pair a pinot noir’s expressive aromas of red cherry and raspberry with the gentle notes of fresh spring flowers and your Saturday is off to a fine start. More HERE.

(This sure would be a good place to get a bouquet for Mom and your Aunties for Easter, we’re just saying.)

Make the most of your money

If the only April showers you’re drenched in these days are from the flood of tears you’re crying because it’s tax time and, $%&#, once again you have not sought out the wisdom of folks who are good with numbers … here’s something you might benefit from moving forward.

On Saturday, some wise money-minded folks will be at Ninth Street Baptist Church to present SpringFest 2022, which features seminars on how to make the most of your dollars by putting them in the right place.

There’ll be other folks there also with good information about other things like health care, mental health, and education (Gateway Community and Technical, Richard Stokes Optician, Mental Health America, St. Elizabeth Healthcare, Jovante Woods Foundation, and more). Details HERE.
