Steins, chakras & indigo dye

COVINGTON, Ky. – As has been the case all summer long, there’s plenty to do in The Cov this weekend, many under the categories of food, libations, music, and learning something new.

Scroll below and you’ll find classes where you’ll learn to create, to center yourself and be calm, to celebrate, and one event in particular for remembrance and an opportunity to do something good.

A festival with flavor

A block of Church Street running between the school and church will be shut down Friday through Saturday for the Holy Cross Festival and Taste of Latonia.

There’s a strong entertainment lineup, a raffle, a kiddie land play area, and, as one might expect, plenty of local food vendors lined up on both sides of Church. Strap on the feed bag.

‘Remember Gloria’

It’s heartbreaking to write in the past tense about Gloria San Miguel.

Anyone who ever walked into Roebling Point Books & Coffee and met Gloria instantly knew her as an amazing and thoughtful person. She touched many people with her kindness and smile.

On Aug.19, Gloria was tragically killed in a hit-and-run accident while riding her bike from Newport to Covington. So on Friday, Lil’s Bagels is giving all tips, donations, and a portion of proceeds to Gloria’s family as part of their Remember Gloria event. Stop by and help remember this community activist, barista, Mom, and friend.

What’s shakin’ with your chakras?

So, you been feeling a little “off” lately and can’t figure why? Keep getting sick? Making silly mistakes? Or maybe every dang thing in your life feels like it’s falling apart?

If you’re nodding your head to any of those “symptoms,” the culprit may well be that your chakras – those seven main energy centers that line up along the central channel of your body (aka your shushumna nadi) – are out of balance.

An out-of-alignment root, sacral, solar plexus, throat, third eye, or crown chakra can throw your world off, and all the while you’re just thinking your life just stinks, not realizing help is available.

So, what to do? Get yourself to Group Energy Healing Meditation at Purple Paisley, Local Artisan Shop on Saturday, where you’ll learn a simple technique to balance, clear, and strengthen your chakras.

Tranquility in a box

If one were to create a box that could calm their anxious moments, what, pray tell, might it look like? (Large enough to crawl into with a well-worn blanket and a small screen television so one could play “Practical Magic” on a loop might do the trick.)

On Saturday at the Hellmann Creative Center, Art Equals will teach you how to make your own personalized Mini Calming Box, and you can include lots of colors, textures, and even a little aromatherapy to retreat to when anxiety strikes.

In addition to this magnificent box, which will be the perfect size to keep with you in the classroom, office, or just about anywhere in public, art therapist Charlotte Reed will teach techniques for calming the old nervous system when feeling stressed. All supplies provided, but you can bring comfy stuff from home too.

A party that’s into indigo

If you’ve never watched the magic of indigo dye in person, here’s your chance.

The Indigo Dye Party at Redden Gardens on Sunday is the perfect opportunity to take whatever wonderful 100 percent natural material (think cotton, linen, wool, or silk) and transform it into something truly special through shibori, a Japanese style of resist-dyeing that produces patterns on fabric.

All you need for this party is fabric and gloves, ’cuz Redden Gardens will provide the rest (even a little creative inspiration).

Shine the steins, queue the accordions

Shake the wrinkles out of your lederhosen and get ready for Braxton Brewing Co.’s

Oktoberfest Biergarten in the Taproom on Saturday.

Is it too hot for lederhosen? Of course. But Braxton says, “Prost to traditions!” and Oktoberfest season is upon us.

Expect plenty of Braxton’s Oktober Fuel Lager at this official tapping as well as lots of opportunities to proclaim yourself as a champion. Hoist your stein better than the rest and there’s a prize in it for you. Show up with the swankest dirndl or lederhosen and you just might win the ultimate Oktober Fuel basket.

There’s no end to the good times at what Braxton says will be the greatest Biergarten celebration the taproom has ever seen.
