COVINGTON, Ky. – Ah, Labor Day weekend. Because it brings us fireworks and an extra day off of work, we forgive all it implies about summer’s end.
Besides, here in The Cov, we know the good times aren’t just seasonal – there are great things to do all year long. (And after all this heat, aren’t we all looking forward to fall’s first chill in the air anyway?).
This weekend we’ve got that big, bold annual burst of fireworks to ooh and ahh about, but there’s some other really cool stuff too, like a sneak peek at some local art, more sky gazing (but through a telescope), and the classic sounds of Sinatra and his fellow rat packers. And that’s not all, so read on.
Radiant, glossy, and a bit shadowy. Doesn’t the prospect of a three-day weekend make you feel a bit of all three?
Those words also happen to describe the walls of the Behringer-Crawford Museum, which are lined with beautiful original works of art that you can see tonight at the museum’s freshART Preview Reception.
You’ll not only get a preview of the really cool art, but also get to meet the talented local artists. So go mingle, talk art, and get excited at the upcoming freshART party and live auction next weekend. Event is free.
Covington Parks & Rec has a brand new telescope, and they want you to come take a peek at the twinkling skies with them.
Not only will you get a really cool look into the night sky, but you’ll learn how to track stars, recognize constellations, understand star charts, and observe planet satellites at the Future Galileo’s Program on Friday at Hands Pike Park.
Be on the look out for Saturn’s rings, Jupiter’s “eye,” and the moon’s craters.
Kick back to some seriously good Rat Pack vibes on Saturday when the smooth sounds of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Dean Martin fill Devou Park.
The Kentucky Symphony Orchestra closes its 28th summer season in the parks with its own incarnation of Frank, Sammy, and Dean, backed by a stellar big band with strings.
If we have to say, ‘so long to summer,’ there’s no better way to do it than with “Strangers in the Night,” “Volare,” “Mr. Bojangles,” and 18 other classic hits at the KSO’s The Pack is Back.
Through archived images, inspired artwork, newspaper articles, and personal accounts from written correspondence, filmmakers Cam Miller and Casey Head tell the story of the day-by-day events of September 1 through 13, 1862, when Confederate forces threatened Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.
You can hear from the filmmakers themselves and view September Siege, A Civil War Film at The Roost Latonia on Sunday.
It’s head back, chin up, and eyes to the sky on Sunday for the Western & Southern/WEBN Fireworks at Riverfest (Or, better yet, curl up on your couch and watch this end-of-summer blowout from the comfort of your home).
If you’re adamant about heading to the riverfront, here are reliable rules and a street closing map.
