COVINGTON, Ky. – Hurry home and squeeze your dog into its costume, because there’s a lot of Halloween fun in The Cov this weekend, and it starts tonight with a canine costume contest.
But not all of that orange-and-black fun is for the dogs.
There’s also hockey masks (but no machetes) … spooky art (really good art) … cryptids creepin’ around … monster mashes … Halloween bashes … and all range of good-natured, slightly scary fun at bars, concert venues, and organizations around town.
Harness up your best friend (of course we’re talking about your dog), and head to Braxton Brewing Company tonight for some tail-waggin’ Halloween fun at the Yappy Hour & Pet Halloween Costume Contest.
Dress him or her up in the most fabulous costume you can find, then go buy yourself a beer or three because Braxton will donate $1 from the sale of each Garage and Switch beer to the Save the Animals Foundation. Good drinks, a human’s best friend, and doing something good for animals all in one evening. (Plus, your pup might come home with the prize).
Birds, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, wasps, and bees (most importantly, bees) need food and protection.
On Saturday morning, which happens to be Pollinator Garden Volunteer Day, you can help provide both of those needed things for our beloved pollinators with a little effort cleaning up the Goebel Park Pollinator Garden.
Just show up at Saturday at the garden, which is located in the back corner of the park’s northern edge, near 5th Street. Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, and bring gloves and your favorite gardening tools if you have them. If not, Cov Parks & Rec staff will have some on hand.
Unlike that infamous hockey mask-wearing murderer Jason Voorhees, the Covington Street Hockey League will be wielding hockey sticks instead of machetes on Saturday at their Night of the Living Send Chapter 3 at Barb Cook Park.
Do you remember when the hockey mask debuted as part of Jason’s attire in the Friday the 13th franchise? It was Part III.
Speaking of the third incantations, dare we guess what might happen at Chapter 3 of the Living Send?
On the “known” side, what we do know is that there will be street hockey, loud music, costumes, and awesome new merchandise for you to purchase. Donations go to support Deontae, who was the first local kid to come out and play with the Bubs.
Remember the “Cincinnati Toy Heritage” mural that was on West Court Street during BLINK? Jonathan Queen created the mural with ArtWorks, sourced the original Kenner toys in the piece – Care Bear, Strawberry Shortcake, and Mr. Potato Head – and had them 3D-scanned for the animation. Cool, huh?
And then there’s the “Fresh Harvest” mural at 1014 Vine St. Those peppers. We’ll be darned if that red onion, purple cabbage, corn, cucumbers, and more don’t look like they’re pouring out of the side of the exterior wall of the Kroger building.
(Those are just two examples of why we’re betting that you’ve seen the Kentucky-born Queen’s work, even if you didn’t know it at the time).
How does Queen do it? Check out this KET program and you’ll find out.
As for the Covington connect … on Saturday you can purchase your very own Jonathan Queen painting at that cool Covington shop called Earth to Kentucky. The Jonathan Queen Small Painting Spooktacular is a rare opportunity to buy original work by Queen at a price range that just might suit your budget, so don’t miss this one day pop-up event.
The Center for Great Neighborhoods of Covington is bringing a bit of spooky and a whole lot of fun to its Halloween/Día de los Muertos Block Party on Saturday.
It’s a free event with plenty of food … drinks … music by DJ Monet … games … a bounce house … fun cryptid creatures to run from (or to) … and art-making projects. Plus, there will be some spooky light projections from Cincy Illuminations (think “‘scary BLINK”).
