COVINGTON, Ky. – Before we tell you about the fun things you can do in Covington this weekend, allow us a brief vent about the dread (nay, “fury”) we feel knowing that Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday at 2 a.m. (##!$&%$##!!!).
Earlier mornings. Shorter evenings. Maybe we should have included the ominous words “darkness fall,” at the top of the page. Oh well.
Now that we’ve got that complainin’ out of the way, this weekend there will be lots of good stuff to do, like … watching beefy-armed men wrestle … dodging brides as they run through the streets (To the altar? From the altar? Read on.) … cheering smooth-skating “jammers” … making pottery for a good cause and other cool stuff just for fun … listening to eclectic music, and more.
It’s as much a seasonal marker as brittle leaves dropping from the trees, a dip in the temperature, and flannel as a wardrobe staple.
The Covington Farmers Market moves its weekly wealth of goods from local farmers and artisans to Braxton Brewing Co. on Saturday, taking it all inside where it will be warm and toasty through chillier months. So from now on, seek out your Saturday morning marketing needs here.
It’s a championship that puts the biceps brachii, pronator teres, pectoralis major, and flexor carpi ulnaris to the test.
It’s also how many a family squabble has been settled.
We’re talking about armwrestling, of course, and on Saturday morning some of the finest arm wrestlers out there are gathering in Covington to put their might to the test for the Northern Kentucky Armwrestling Championship at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in a bold display of upper limb majesty.
Not to be all prideful, but there might be someone right here at City Hall that we would put top dollar on to emerge as the champion of this event, were he to enter. Just sayin’. (No, it’s not the mayor.)
Want to have a little creative fun, do good, and have a mug of hot chocolate (or glass of wine) while you’re doing it?
Pottery with a Purpose happens Saturday at The Zembrodt Education Center, which is an extension of Point Arc. Funds from the event will benefit the Center which does the important work of giving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities opportunities to reach their highest potential educationally, residentially, socially, and vocationally.
Try your hand at painting an ornament, plate, tile, bowl, coffee mug, or more. The cost of the potter depends on what you choose and, once it’s fired in the kiln, the Center will get in touch with you to come pick up your masterpiece.
Black-n-Bluegrass Roller Derby is hosting its final bout of the season at Hits Indoor Baseball and Sportsplex Saturday during Roller Derby Fan Appreciation Night.
Come cheer on your favorite jammers and blockers as Black-n-Bluegrass takes on Demolition City in a sport that’s part finesse, part violence. There’s a free appreciation gift in it for you too (while supplies last).
Watch out for runaway brides racing down the streets of The Cov on Sunday. (Well, they’re not actually running away from the altar, but they’re going to be running.)
The Great Bridal Chase 5K is a classic run/walk with all the best elements of a wedding, including an after-party reception at Hotel Covington.
Participants can support their favorite cause by donating a portion of their registration fee.
So, brides, partners, and bridal/bachelorette parties get ready to take your mark. (Wedding attire is not required but you’re sure welcome to dress up for the race).
