Dark Charge, Bingo & holiday carols

COVINGTON, Ky. – Trees aglow … the sound of caroling voices … the scent of hot chocolate spiked with peppermint wafting through a chilly evening wind … and traditions celebrated as revelers lift their glass in toast of December’s Dark Charge brew.

With turkey season (i.e. Thanksgiving) behind us, this weekend the signs, sounds, tastes, and spirit of the holiday season in The Cov commence. Go experience it as it suits you.

Fill the fridge

Nothing sets the tone for the season of giving like an effort to provide food for those in need.

That’s why tonight’s Holiday Giveback Party at Frosthaus Benefitting the Covunity Fridge is a perfect way to begin your December. And all you have to do is bring an item to donate to the Fridge (located at Redden Gardens at 909 Scott St.), when you stop in to play Thirsty Thursday Bingo at Frosthaus.

Not familiar with the Covunity Fridge? Well, it exists because of food insecurity, and food security is a bit different than hunger. While hunger is the feeling someone has when they don’t have food, food insecurity is the consistent lack of food to have a healthy life because of your economic situation. Addressing food insecurity is a way to end hunger. (So, you’re seeing that this an important bingo game, right?)

Light it up and sing

Trinity Episcopal Church’s Christmas Tree Lighting and Carols on Friday features all the good things about a holiday tree lighting: hot chocolate, fire pits, Christmas carols by the Trinity Singers, and Travelin’ Tom’s Coffee Truck (to keep you wide-eyed while you sing).

The Freedom Singers of Independence Kentucky will be there too, so no need to worry if you can’t carry a tune. (Just move your lips in a joyous and animated fashion and leave the carolin’ to the pros).

‘Tis the season for a big, bold block party

When fine legacies like bourbon and beer come together, it’s worth celebrating.

For the last 8 years, that’s exactly what Braxton Brewing Company has been doing.

On the first Saturday of December, Braxton has hosted its Dark Charge Winter Block Party to celebrate the magnificent collision of bourbon and beer through the release of their Dark Charge barrel-aged Imperial Stout.

This party starts Friday and continues through Saturday. (Why limit a celebration to one day, right?) Count on plenty of food, good music, and tasty variants to enjoy.

Cast on, bind off

Now is the time to become a proficient knitter and keep yourself, your friends, and your family toasty warm all winter long with your one-of-a-kind woolen creations.

To get a start on knitting that winter wardrobe, you’ll want to head over to Stitch Yarn Studio this Saturday for its Beginner Knitting Class. It’s a 3-class session to teach the foundation skills you need to become a knitting pro.

By the last session you’ll have mastered the skill (and vernacular) to knit and purl, do a stockinette stitch, a garter stitch, bind off, and learn a whole lot of other tips and tricks that will aid you in your projects and thwart your desire to thrust a knitting needle into your temple.

Your instructor will explain the mystery of reading a knitting pattern (How is it there’s not a documentary about the knitters who first cracked this perplexing code?). You’ll learn about helpful notions and tools, and how to determine your knitting gauge and why it’s useful.

A melody of lessons

Modeled after the tradition of A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at King’s College in London, England, St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption’s Advent Festival of Lessons and Carols on Sunday will herald the coming Nativity Season and feature with a sense of holiday elegance and class that could only be inspired by stiff ol’ Brits.

The program includes the music of Bernhard Ord, Felix Mendelssohn, Claude Goudimel, Ralph Vaughan-Williams, and more.

The event is FREE and open to the public.
