Pub crawl & Christkindlmarkt

COVINGTON, Ky. – We’ve got a spirited weekend ahead.

There’s a whole lotta holiday opportunities to shop and sip in The Cov this week. (Even better, some of the events allow you to do both at the same time).

So, in the event that you emerge from the weekend having purchased more gifts than you intended, we understand and we say, “Cheers to the most ‘spirited’ gift-giver of the season!”

Cheers! It’s a pub crawl!

The Covington Holiday Pub Crawl is Friday, and you can sip your way through some of the city’s most satisfying watering holes and restaurants.

Begin your libation journey at Covington Yard, then make your way to Molly Malone’s Irish Pub & Restaurant, The Hannaford, House of Orange, The Standard, Paddy’s on Main, Zazou, Mac’s Pizza, and Gypsy’s. (Or however you choose to wind your way through The Cov).

Count on plenty of festive fun, swag, and holiday goodies (while supplies last, of course). If you see any of us along your way, be sure to smile and wave.

Just don’t party TOO hard, because …

Jingle Bell Run

The 2022 Arthritis Foundation’s Jingle Bell Run is Saturday so don ye your favorite holiday attire and come and spread good cheer for a good cause. If you’re not running, you can certainly cheer on those who are (and hopefully sponsor them too).

The annual run, which starts at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center and routes its way from Covington to Cincinnati and back, raises awareness and funds to support arthritis research for better treatments and a cure.

‘Covington Day’ at BCM

How about a holiday outing this weekend that’s FREE to all Covington residents?

You’ll find it at Behringer-Crawford Museum’s “Covington Day” on Saturday with free admission to its “Holly Jolly Days” exhibits which run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m..

There’s a whole lot to see and do, so plan to make a day of it. There’s the Annual Holiday Toy Trains Exhibit, an interactive LEGO play space and exhibit, The Rosemary Clooney House White Christmas Collection exhibit, and Winter Wonderland in NaturePlay@BCM. No shortage of holiday fun at BCM.

Build a future

You’re bound to already know about the Enzweiler Building Institute (EBI) construction trades school in Covington because we’ve been writing a whole heckuva a lot about it, and with good reason.

The EBI is one of two long-awaited construction trades programs opening in Covington next year (the other is the Covington Academy of Heritage Trades), where instructors will teach skills related to carpentry, electric, HVAC, welding, masonry, plumbing, and facilities management and remodeling.

We’re telling you about it now because on Saturday there’s an Enzweiler Building Institute Information Session for prospective students. The inaugural session of EBI classes begins Jan. 31, so if you have a scintilla of interest in what’s going to be a pretty amazing program, get yourself to this session.

The construction industry is desperate for good workers. This is your ticket to a successful career, and the City is proud to be a financial supporter.

When Santa’s ‘to do’ list involves beer

The 4th Annual Reindeer Games at Braxton Brewing on Saturday will put you in the right frame of mind to dive into the holiday hustle and bustle.

Santa’s “To-Do List at Braxton” involves teaming up with Covington’s Holiday Farmers Market for hot coffee, wreath making, local vendors, live music with Mitch Klein, and photos with Santa.

And there will be beer. Plenty of Braxton beer.

Prepare to be HYP-MO-TIZED

Remember when hypnotist Marshall Sylver came on The David Letterman Show and hypnotized the show’s stage manager Biff Henderson, who, as Letterman said, “went out like a carp?”

Well, on Saturday, expert hypnotherapist and master magician Ron Diamond will mesmerize and hypnotize you (if you’re willing), when he brings Before Your Very Eyes, an event to support the Behringer-Crawford Museum, to the Riedlin-Schott Community Room at the Kenton County Administration Building.

Diamond has been performing comedic hypnosis and magic for more than 40 years, but there’s no mind control in his magic, only dazzle and laughter for the whole family.

Diamond is the real deal, having trained in clinical hypnosis with degrees in psychology and sociology. He lectures on medical hypnosis at conventions and universities around the country.

Christkindlmarkt

Did you know that the first Christkindlmarkt (an event where people gathered to enjoy the festive holiday season), dates back to 1628 in Germany?

It was an open-air market filled with the scent of baked goods and sweets, like stollen, and lebkuchen … where Glühwein, a red wine, flowed warm and steaming into cups … and where local craftspeople sold their wares.

Here in The Cov, there’s a timelessness to how we do things, so the Covington Christkindlmarket Presented by Bourbon Haus 1841 on Sunday revives the traditional open-air market of days long gone by in the heart of the MainStrasse business, retail, and entertainment district. It’s a celebration of Old World charm with 21st century vibes.

Expect to find plenty of artists and makers whose wares will help you check off your holiday shopping list, while you enjoy libations, live music and more.

Circle the sisters

SoHza Sister Fairtrade Boutique’s Sister Circle event on Sunday is an open house that will give a percentage of the day’s profits to support Girls on the Run.

Consider this doubling the good you can do. When you purchase SoHza Sister fair trade jewelry, purses, clothing and other items that are made from empowered women groups around the globe, you’re already offering those women opportunities that change lives.

Not familiar with Girls on the Run? It’s a nonprofit that has fun, evidence-based programs that inspire girls to build confidence, kindness, and decision-making skills. It helps impart lessons that illustrate the important connection between physical and emotional health.
