COVINGTON, Ky. – In between the magnificent holiday shopping you’re doing at all the fine local retailers in The Cov this weekend, take a break and enjoy the fun events going on in the city as well.
Put down the shopping bags, rest your aching feet, and eat some totchos, listen to music, hang out with cats, and then … get back up and finish your shopping.
Gather your craftiest friends (no, not the schemers – the ones that know how to make stuff), and head to Braxton Brewing Company tonight for the Gingerbread House Competition.
It’s a FREE event, teams are limited to 4, and there are great prizes to be had if you’re any good at building things with gingerbread.
All the help you need to survive the stress of the holiday season can be found in a travel-size kit.
But this isn’t just any ol’ kit that you can purchase at the store or have delivered to your porch. This is a kit that’s created by you.
The Holiday Survival Kit workshop on Saturday at the Hellmann Creative Center, through Art Equals, will show you how to create your own personalized survival kit for this time of year when warmth and joy can come under attack from busy schedules, family drama, and a daunting shopping list looming over your head.
You’ll emerge from this workshop with a travel-size kit filled with plenty of things to help restore your calm. All supplies are provided but feel free to bring a special things to add (like soft fabric, favorite charms, buttons, amulet, lucky gemstone, and more).
Larry’s All-American Café will debut tacos, totchos, and walking tacos made with Nate’s Covington Gold Dust. That’s right, gold dust “mined” right here in The Cov.
And before we launch into what a fine food event this will be, please indulge us as we take a moment to give a verbal salute to Larry’s tater tots (aka totchos):
An order of Larry’s totchos is delivered in a little paper boat featuring perfectly crisp tater tots (browned to perfection in an air fryer), buried beneath a generous slathering of ranch dressing, and garnished with rather significant morsels of bacon. Trust us, experiencing this marriage of flavors will elevate your worst of days.
… Now, back to Nate’s Covington Gold Dust and the event at hand.
Nate Nunemaker, a purveyor of fine hot sauces, is a city boy here in The Cov who grows hot peppers in his urban garden. The bounty of hot peppers led to him conjuring up some bold, flavorful sauces and condiments.
Covington Gold Dust is made with cayenne peppers grown, picked, and dehydrated by Farmer Nate. (Hear for yourself about this legendary sauce in this little video). Larry’s All-American Café’s Farmer Nate’s Sauce Company Covington Gold Dust Release Party on Saturday is your chance to try this bold flavor and find out what the hype is all about.
International opera singer (and NKY native) Catherine Keen brings her talented students to The Cov on Saturday for the NKMTA Merry Musicale Recitals at The Carnegie.Expect to hear exceptional music.
NKMTA, btw, is the Northern Kentucky Music Teachers Association and Keen, who teaches voice in Northern Kentucky, spent nearly 25 years performing all over the world with some of the biggest names in opera, like renowned tenor Placido Domingo, who hired her to sing the title part in the Opera “Samson et Dalila” at the Kennedy Center.
Suffice it to say, her students are learning from one of the best, which means you’re in for a treat.
Come celebrate the holiday season with Covington Parks & Recreation at City Hall on Friday for Happy Cov Holiday.
Not only will there be plenty of crafts, games and prizes, and your very own ornament to decorate, but the jolliest man of the season will make a special appearance.
Whatever it is we’re talking about here, you’re in, right?
On Sunday, Miss Kyleigh’s Fun with Kiddos and Kitties will be filled with holiday crafting fun – and cats, which means kitty cuddles galore.
Miss Kyleigh is a local children’s dance and movement teacher who also happens to be a Purrfect Day Cat Café team member. Kids will get to dance and cuddle kitties. (Talk about good times!)
While the event is recommended for younger children, all ages are welcome.
