City email updates to include police news, street-sweeping schedules

But you must sign up/change ‘profile’ to receive items

COVINGTON, Ky. – People who sign up to receive news updates in their email inbox from the City of Covington now have two more categories from which to choose.

In addition to the existing “General News & Information,” “Business & Economic Development,” and “Recreation & Events” categories, members of the public and news media now can sign up to receive news items from the Covington Police Department and related to Public Works’ street-sweeping and leaf collection schedules.

But you must take steps to receive those emails. Those steps differ based on whether you’re already signed up to receive the City’s emails, delivered through the Constant Contact email platform.

If you are already signed up:

  • Scroll down to the bottom of any news email you receive from the City and click on the “Update Profile” link.
  • When the screen changes, click the “submit” button and instructions will be emailed to you. (It might take a minute.)
  • Open the instructions email and again click on “Update Your Profile.”
  • You will be taken to the original sign-up screen, where you need to check the additional boxes of the categories you want to receive.

If you’re NOT signed up to receive the City’s emails but want to receive them:

  • Click on Signup.
  • When the screen changes, enter your name and email address and click the boxes of the categories you want to receive. (Note that the “News & Information” box gives you the broadest number of subjects, i.e. everything but the other categories.)

The enrollment link is also accessible from the home page of the City’s website, www.covingtonky.gov, next to “Latest news.”

Police news

The new “Covington Police Department Media Release” category will be used by Covington police officials to inform the public and reporters about breaking news related to public safety and about issues of concern.

“When something happens, we often get inundated with questions, and this will allow us to communicate with a large number of people in a fairly quick way to both alleviate anxiety and squelch rumors,” said Lt. Justin Bradbury, who serves as the Department’s liaison to the media.

Public works

Clicking the “Street Sweeping & Leaf Collection” box will enable you to receive updates from the City related to the schedules for sweeping streets and collecting leaves.

The updates will include links to a map where you can find out when crews will be on your street so you can move your car.

About communications

The City uses Constant Contact to communicate with its residents on a wide variety of topics and issues, including announcements of new projects and initiatives, grant opportunities, public hearings, policy changes, and the status of economic development projects.

Almost 8,500 people are signed up to receive the emails, including residents, business owners, media, local and state government officials, former residents, and developers. The emails are also posted on the City’s website, www.covingtonky.gov.

In addition, the City maintains an active social media presence, where it delivers additional news via Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram (@covingtonkygov), LinkedIn (@city-of-covington), and Youtube (@covingtonkentucky1807).

“We think residents need and deserve to know what’s going on with their local government,” City Manager Ken Smith said. “That’s why Covington leaders decided in 2018 to start investing in creating an active communications network, and we’re told often that the public appreciates that openness.”
