COVINGTON, Ky. – The Covington Farmers Market returns to the glorious outdoors on Saturday. (Cue the sound of raucous applause).
And once you’ve stocked up on plenty of healthy greens, head to Latonia and plant a tree to beautify your city because Saturday is Earth Day … find treasures at the return of MV Flea … be moved by cool art … mellow out to live music … and support a whole lot of women on a woman-owned business crawl (you were wondering what WOB meant up there in the header, right?) Scroll down and plan accordingly, neighbor.
Step into a world of virtual reality and immersive and interactive art tonight at Pique Gallery for the opening of Before Your Eyes: a Visual Immersion.
The show features art created by students of the Polyvision and Immersive Video class, showcasing the works of Shaquira Rodriguez Ortiz, Caleb Morris, Mykaela Mays, Em Geppert, Ryan Hartshorn, and Gabriel Beckles.
It’s a one-night reception and show, so don’t miss your chance.
You’re not afraid of sore muscles and a little mud, are you?
On Saturday, volunteers will gather in Latonia for a Street Tree Planting, where they (and hopefully YOU) will plant about 40 trees along Decoursey Avenue and 39th Street.
You’ll be digging holes and planting species that include Serviceberry, Persian Ironwood, hackberry, and Black Gum – all to increase Latonia’s tree canopy, bring shade, improve health, and the make the community prettier.
The event is sponsored by the Covington Urban Forestry Board and Urban Forestry Division. Keep Covington Beautiful will make sure you stay properly hydrated with refreshments. Bring tools if you got them, and wear old clothes and boots.
It is one of the surest signs that spring has sprung in The Cov: The Covington Farmers Market returns to 3rd and Court on Saturday and will remain there until cold weather drives it indoors next winter.
Come rain or shine, you can count on finding everything you need to stock the cupboards and fridge. This year the market has a cheese and dairy vendor, freshly sourced meats, breads and bakery items, granolas and energy bites, alternative remedies for what ails you, natural health and beautification aids, eggs, and plenty of glorious greens. Lots and lots of interesting greens.
There’s no denying that crafts are appealing to many, but we’re guessing the sound of those sweet harp strings being plucked by harpist Lindsey Duncan will summon the masses to Saturdays Arts & Crafts Fair on Saturday in the Kenton County Public Library’s Truist Meeting Room.
Stop by and see local artists or craft vendors and even test your skill at a few hands-on crafts.
Each patron will receive an arts & crafts passport and be entered to win a $100 gift card.
Nothing says cheers to Earth Day like a lifting a chilly Old Fashioned to your lips.
On Saturday, which is indeed the actual Earth Day, the good folks at Smoke Justis are partnering with Maker’s Mark to bring you Bourbon & Botanicals: A Sustainable Sipping Spree.
You might not know (because we sure didn’t) that Maker’s Mark was the first distillery in Bourbon County to earn a B Corporation accreditation, affirming years of sustainability practices and community-focused initiatives that contribute to the greater good.
The first 75 folks to purchase a Maker’s Mark Old Fashioned or a Maker’s Mark Flight will receive a beautiful succulent to brighten their home.
There are so many woman-owned businesses in The Cov that they warrant their own celebration.
In fact, you’ll need a map to navigate your way to all of the participating businesses Sunday’s very first WOB Crawl here. Fortunately, Aviatra Accelerators, which helps women start and grow their businesses, will make sure you’re provided with one.
And why are there are so many woman-owned businesses in Covington? Tom West, the City’s Economic Development Director, pretty much nails it: “Support for diverse business ownership is not a talking point for the City of Covington; it’s in our DNA …” (mic drop).
So, get ready to sip, shop, snack, and save on Sunday at this six-hour event while supporting a whole lot of woman-owned businesses in The Cov.
Horse fans, history buffs, and residents who STILL say they live in “Latonia” instead of “Covington” should head to The Roost Latonia on Sunday.
Filmmaker Cam Miller is showing Old Latonia, a film about the old Latonia Race Course, the Latonia Derby, and presidential attention.
Just in time for The Kentucky Derby.
