Tacos, polka & nature photography

COVINGTON, Ky. – Behold this weekend in The Cov.

Where else can you unload your dated and dead electronic burdens at an annual e-waste event … sit on the riverfront with tacos and salsa (the dance AND the fiery goodness) … embrace the polka … see nature through another person’s aperture … and wind down with goats and stretching. At a library.

Good stuff going on in The Cov. Find what suits you.

Small biz & pleasure

Proving that business and pleasure do mix, tonight’s SBA Loans 101: Workshop/Networking/Happy Hour at The Roost Latonia marries a good cocktail with small business savvy.

Learn what kind of business loan will help you grow your business as the wise women of Aviatra Accelerators, in partnership with Heritage Bank, talk to you about the different types of small biz loans that are available, how to qualify for them, and which ones work best for you (all while enjoying a good libation and meeting interesting folk).

Taco to the river

The Rockin’ Taco Festival starts Friday at Covington Plaza, bringing three Latino culture-filled days to the banks of the Ohio River.

We’re talking tacos, chilly beverages (pretty sure there will be margaritas), plenty of local vendors, free entertainment, inflatables for kids, salsa dance lessons, and live music all weekend long.

The ease of recycling responsibly

At last, the opportunity you’ve waited for to unload that broken and dead computer equipment and electronics, foam packaging, and stack of papers you’ve squirreled away is upon us.

The 2023 E-Waste Event at Holmes High School on Saturday (co-sponsored by Keep Covington Beautiful and the City), is going to make it easy for you to get rid of those burdensome items while keeping toxic material out of our landfills.

So now’s the time to Marie Kondo your paper and electronic inventory. We’re talking about old computers, computer accessories, laptops, keyboards, mice, telephone equipment, cellphones, printers, fax machines, copiers, stereo equipment, televisions, remotes, satellite boxes, video game systems, microwaves, alkaline batteries, loose and dry papers, and Styrofoam packaging materials. You’ll find a more complete list here of what to bring and what not to bring.

Aperture for nature

From the soar of migrating ducks in flight to the tiniest hairs and spines of a poisonous saddleback caterpillar, photographer Kira MacNeil’s camera captures both the vast and the intricate of the natural world as it plays out on her farm in Butler, Ky.

You can marvel at the world through MacNeil’s lens for yourself on Saturday when her Dancing with Nature Photography Exhibit opens at the Behringer-Crawford Museum with an open reception.

Herons, starlings, deer, butterflies, a praying mantis, spiders, and literally whatever jumps in front of her have made their way into MacNeil’s exhibit, and, now that they’re art, she’s framed them with salvaged, repurposed wood from old structures on her farm.

MacNeil will be around to talk about her exhibit and you can enjoy light refreshments while you chat and peruse her work. The exhibit will run through Aug. 13.

Rock that tuba

Polka comes to Covington on Sunday (it’s not just for Oktoberfest!), so there’s still a sliver of time to perfect those three-rapid-steps-one-hop dance moves to that upbeat 2/4 time by catching a few episodes of Big Joe Polka Show Classics on RFDTV, where The Sauerkrauts, Barefoot Becky and the Ivanhoe Dutchman bring those sweet polka sounds to the screen.

Covington Parks & Recreation’s Polka Warriors Concert in the Park brings the real live polka deal to the Devou Park Bandshell with this Cincinnati-based brass band that celebrates German/Bavarian heritage through music. (The name sounds like they’re marching into battle with accordions, right?)

So, grab your polka partner and head to Devou where you’re sure to hear the hits of Frankie Yankovic, the Six Fat Dutchmen, and other polka greats.

Yo, goat

Can’t be baahthered to do yoga? Maybe a little cloven-hooved furry creature can goad you into peaceful poses.

On Sunday, Goat Yoga at the Kenton County Public Library offers the unique and wonderful experience of practicing yoga with goats.

In case you’re curious (we were), goat yoga was started in Oregon by a woman named Lainey Morse who, after getting divorced and being handed an autoimmune diagnosis, found solace with the goats on her farm. She dubbed time with the goats as “Goat Happy Hour” and began inviting friends to share the serenity. Next thing you know, a friend suggested doing yoga around the goats and Morse, a marketing guru, had her first goat yoga class.

So, here we are with goat yoga in The Cov. Bring a yoga mat and a towel and let the folks at Yogoat, a Cincinnati-based goat yoga company, and their four-footed yogis help you find the serenity you seek.
