COVINGTON, Ky. – At what point in adulthood do we no longer equate the return to the classroom with the end of summer? Even though your kids are back learning “i before e” and all about that theorem of Pythagoras, we’re positive the season doesn’t officially end until Sept. 23 – which means plenty of summer fun is still happening in The Cov.
We’re talking outdoor movies, getting soaked in a parking lot, checking out cool boats, and maybe even a making your own broad-brimmed hat to shield you from that intense it’s-still-summer sun and heat.
Because it IS still summer, dang it. Make the most of it.
How about an outdoor movie beneath a starry sky? After all, the weather is cooperating (for another second anyway).
You can also take in a little pre-show entertainment – enjoy music from a DJ’s curated playlist, eat great food and sip refreshing drinks.
If that sounds like a good time, then Covington Plaza is where you’ll want to be tonight. But you’ve gotta act fast because there’s a good chance that Nightlight 513’s Outdoor Movie Night: “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” will sell out fast.
The flick stars Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis, Jason Segel, the ageless Paul Rudd, Russell Brand, Jonah Hill, and Bill Hader. Yep, good cast.
And on a side note, did anyone catch Jason Segel’s portrayal of writer David Foster Wallace in “The End of the Tour?” So, in the event that “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” is sold out, stay home and treat yourself to that outstanding performance.
Friday night’s Roebling Rock the River Boat Show is the prelude to the annual “Rock the River” event, where boat owners from far and wide sprint across the Ohio River, and it’s your chance to get a glimpse of some mighty fine, sleek machines while they’re docked.
In addition to marveling at shiny sleek boats and soaking in the riverside vibes, you’ll get to partake in the tasty bites and refreshing libations of some of The Cov’s local venues: Smoke Justis, Molly Malone’s, Keystone Bar & Grill, and Frosthaus.
You’re likely well aware that Braxton Brewing Co. serves may fine brews from their bar, but have you ever heard of a traveling custom hat bar where you serve yourself a chapeau of your own creation?
If such a bar is news to you (too), then head over to Braxton on Saturday to make a tastefully (or audaciously) festooned fedora, ballcap, beanie, bucket, boater, beret, porkpie, pillbox, straw hat, ushanka, top hat, trilby, ascot, or bonnet, at the Custom Hat Bar event, which is happening because there is – believe it or not – a company called Kyliico Custom Hat Bar, Kentucky’s Original Traveling Hat Bar, and they’re bringing the goods for you make your own hat. Note that you’ll need a reservation.
Kyliico will provide a range of hats that are generally “one size fits most,” but odds are they will not have some of the aforementioned caps like a ushanka, trilby, or pillbox – but, hey, if you do then bring it, you’ll only have to purchase accessories to dress it up.
You know what was missing from the “Barbie” movie? A dress-up night with cats. (How is it that Weird Barbie didn’t have a houseful of felines? Or that Barbie didn’t have a graceful Khao Manee napping in the Dream House? Or that Ken wasn’t consoling himself with a purring Abyssinian?)
Oh well, Purrfect Day Cat Café knows that Barbie and kittens go together like peas and carrots. Their Barbie Dress-Up Night with Kittens on Saturday is for ages 18+ only, and you’re to come in your best Barbie (or Ken) outfit and be prepared to sip cocktails, cuddle with kittens, and cross your fingers that you win the Barbie outfit contest.
One likely doesn’t think that libraries and waterparks go together, but the Kenton County Public Library will make the case on Sunday that it’s a fine pairing.
Covington Water Day will transform the library’s parking into a veritable water world, with large water-themed attractions, a Covington Fire Department pumper truck, a Kona Ice Truck, and water balloons.
Bring a towel and sunscreen, and prepare to get soaked.
Baker Hunt Art and Cultural Center has taught, inspired, motivated, and moved generations of local folks to make art. In fact, the Center is one reason Covington has long had such a cool local art vibe.
If you want a glimpse of the creative magic born in Baker Hunt’s classrooms, visit the campus on Sunday for the Baker Hunt Student Art Show.
Take in the fantastic artwork that this generation of students has created under the tutelage of the Center’s renowned instructors, wander throughout the campus (which is a beauty itself), have delicious nibbles, and sip a cold beverage. What a fine way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
