COVINGTON, Ky. – Culture abounds in The Cov this weekend.
Whether you love art, music, cars (yes, there’s an art to the automobile), stitching, knitting, or kaleidoscope-making, you’re going to find something that pulls you off the couch and into your creative zone.
You can stitch, purl, beat, loop, knot, spin, and hook to your heart’s delight Friday at the Fiber Art Hive Gathering at the Hellmann Creative Center.
The event is a safe space for folks who’ve never threaded a needle as well as a place for those whose walls, closets, and bedding give prideful evidence of their talents. You should RSVP.
Saturday’s Tacos, Vatos, & Lowriders event at Olla Cov celebrates Mexican Independence Day with the veritable culture and community of the Lowrider, a customized vehicle with hydraulic jacks that allow the chassis to be lowered nearly to the road. They’re head-turners for sure.
The cars – most dating from the 1940s to 1960s – are a bit of nostalgia, culture, and personal style all rolled into a sleek, shiny, well-maintained mode of transportation. Think Chevy Impalas, Ford Galaxies, Buick Rivieras, Cadillac Fleetwoods, and Pontiac Catalinas, to name a few.
In addition to cool cars, this celebration includes food (as in seriously good tacos), drinks, and live DJs.
Come see what’s slithering at the Covington Farmers Market on Saturday when WAVE on Wheels rolls up with cold-blooded residents of the Newport Aquarium.
The WAVE Foundation is on a mission to educate folks about aquatic life and conservation, and its reptile animal ambassadors will be doing just that, and likely with something long wrapped around their arms. Touch if you dare.
While you’re there, of course, take home locally grown and produced foods from a variety of vendors.
Look for the glow of tiki torches and follow the sound of tropical music to Twilight in the Islands at Baker Hunt Art and Cultural Center on Saturday.
Baker Hunt’s big, beautiful annual event features art demonstrations, silent auctions, live music, a chance raffle, an art show (by Baker Hunt artists, of course), and “islandy dishes” prepared by Baker Hunt chefs.
You’ll also get to vote on who is crowned the next Baker Hunt “Top Chef.”
Proceeds go to programming (as in all of the spectacular classes) and expanding Baker Hunt’s outreach programs in the community, making art available to all (which – if you can believe – they’ve been doing for 101 years).
There’s “spring cleaning,” where you dive into a “to-do” list of housecleaning tasks so long that by the time you’re finished it’s fall. And then there is Sunday’s Devou Trail Improvement Days, where you actually get a whole lot done in a few hours. (You also get to do so while out in the fresh air, instead of on your closet floor trying to “Marie Kondo” -- aka, “declutter” -- your wardrobe).
No prior trail clearing experience is necessary, as there will be several trail stewards on hand to guide and train you. Tools are provided. Do wear good hiking shoes and gloves and bring water. Trail work is tough and dirty.
