COVINGTON, Ky. – A bit of mystery defines the weekend.
There’s a fundraising event for The Carnegie that features CEOs and local business leaders who can actually play and sing rock & roll like pros. Could it be the corporate world is actually full of former teen garage band members? Leads in high school musicals?
The other mystery has to do with someone – or something – called “Clive.” The message we’re getting is that “Clive is coming home,” so whatever the case, Clive knows The Cov is a pretty out of this world place to live.
Lots more going on. Scroll away. Have fun.
You know where we’re going with this, right?
Tonight, NightLight 513’s Movie Night: “Pulp Fiction” brings you the wildly memorable cast of characters (bolo tie-clad hitman Vincent Vega, Mia Wallace and her Red Apple cigs, and Bible verse-quoting hitman Jules Winnfield, to name a few), and a veritable cacophony of themes, like redemption, karma, illusions of control, fate, and mortality, as well as a string of memorable lines, like the one above. Oh, and that famous dance scene. Welcome to the Quentin Tarantino universe.
You’ll get to watch it all play out on the big screen beneath a wide open sky at Covington Plaza. Go see it. Don’t give Mia a reason to make that square (actually, rectangle) shape in your direction.
Little Amal, the 12-foot-tall puppet representing a 10-year-old Syrian refugee that we told you about last week, arrives in Cincinnati and will make her way across the Roebling Suspension Bridge into The Cov on Friday afternoon, where she’ll be greeted by the Ciara Harper Trio and Revolution Dance Theater for a performance of “Wade in the Water.”
Little Amal is a big deal. She’s traveled across 13 countries meeting more than a million people to celebrate the rich stories of refugees, immigrants, and displaced people and the communities that welcome them. Her brief stop in Covington (she’ll make her way here between 2:45 p.m. and 3 p.m.) is part of her 6,000 mile journey across the U.S. It would be pretty cool to see her – maybe even take a few steps alongside her – as she strolls into town and then back across the Roebling to Cincinnati, where Covington Mayor Joe Meyer and Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval will give her a proper welcome.
Take the kiddos to the Devou Park Bandshell Friday evening to watch the animated antics of those beloved Brooklyn brothers/plumbers, Mario and Luigi, as they tangle in a battle between the Mushroom Kingdom and the Koopas.
Covington Parks & Recreation’s Movie Night: Super Mario Brothers Movie follows Mario, who, after getting separated from Luigi while traveling through an underground labyrinth, hooks up with a princess and an anthropomorphic mushroom to find his brother. Turns out they also need to save the world from the fire-breathing Koopa named Bowser.
Popcorn provided and yard games to play if you get there early.
It’s not even Halloween and, like we said, mysterious things abound in The Cov.
An “Out of This World” Happy Hour at Braxton Brewing Company on Friday promises to deliver an “otherworldly” happy hour, with an “unforgettable cosmic experience.” What on earth (or beyond) is up? Are there extraterrestrial sightings in MainStrasse? Little green men strolling down Madison Avenue? Are mysterious men in black suits and sunglasses skulking around Rittes Corner?
And who’s Clive, the namesake of Braxton’s new “Clive Key Lime Berliner?”
Quite frankly, we’re getting some “War of the Worlds” vibes, and, if there’s any merit in that hunch, we might as well drink up and dance to – you guessed it – “space inspired beats.” Maybe by Friday it will all make sense.
This might be a little out of character for Weekend in Love The Cov, but we’re going to suggest that you cross that wide Licking River for some fun (and a good cause) on Saturday.
Hear us out.
Suits That Rock 2023 “Let’s Dance!” is an annual fundraiser for The Carnegie’s children’s art education programs and it’s happening on Saturday in Newport at the MegaCorp Pavilion. We all know that The Carnegie is a Covington (actually, regional) treasure, so we’re all about supporting its fine efforts regardless of geography.
Each year, for the last 16 years, a bunch of local CEOs and community leaders who had the wisdom to hold tight to their love of music, take the stage and belt out songs to raise money for The Carnegie. Either folks really like the way these “suits” sing, or they really love supporting the arts for children (likely both), because this annual event consistently sells out, and, to date, has raised more than $1.5 million dollars for The Carnegie’s programs for kiddos. So buy our ticket, cross that wide Licking River, rock on, and support this Covington gem that brings art to all.
