Bourbon, ghosts & gratitude

COVINGTON, Ky. – It’s a weekend to demonstrate why you’re prideful about your homemade chili and to stock the bar with a brand-new bourbon (and a birthday bourbon, at that). Ghosts and gratitude are hanging abound as well.

As always, our standard brand of spectacular live music pulses through The Cov this weekend, there’s a family movie night happening, beer combines with baked goods for a flavorful pop-up, and lots more. So get your seasonal closet swap-out over and done with and make time for all the fun that’s happening around town.

The mighty muscle of The Cov

As the heart of the city goes, The Center for Great Neighborhoods is a major chamber of that figurative muscle. In part because it does an awful lot of good things, like bringing people together and encouraging them to work for the good of The Cov, but also because it in turn is among the first to shine a light on the folks doing the good work. That’s what tonight’s Annual Celebration & Heart of the Community Awards at the Hellmann Creative Center is all about.

Blended in with an evening of gratitude and recognition for the people, organizations, and businesses that help make The Cov an amazing place to live, work, and play, will be food by Olla Taqueria, beer from Braxton Brewing Co., a silent auction of all range of goodies, and a raffle.

Haunted art

You ever look at a painting and think, “Hmm. Something’s missing” … and realize that something is a ghost?

Imagine an iridescent apparition afloat on one of Monet’s water lilies. Maybe a more menacing Casper grimacing behind a dancer in a Degas? Perhaps the ghost of your beloved feline skulking through Joan Miro’s “Carnaval d ’Arlequin?” Or, if you’ve been feeling like a mere ghost of yourself, maybe a few brushstrokes to create your own likeness onto a Picasso.

While the odds of painting ghosts onto masterpieces is, well, zero, The Roost Latonia has cooked up an equally fun opportunity that celebrates the spirit of the season coupled with your desire to deface (er, enhance) an existing painting in the spirit of the season.

The Art of Boo – A Thrifted Art Ghost Painting Night at The Roost Latonia tonight includes all the supplies you need to transform a piece of vintage art of your choosing into a charming ghostly masterpiece. Plus, they’ll have delectable bites to keep your creative juices flowing.

Bring a blanket. …

Partnering up with the Residents of Westside, Covington Parks and Recreation brings you its final family flick night of the 2023 season with Movie Night in the Park: “Coco” on Friday.

Grownups should take note that “Coco” has a narrative that’s going to engage them as well as the kiddos, shedding an informative and insightful light on the history of the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos. (And did you know that we are smack in the middle of Hispanic Heritage Month, which is relevant because The Cov boasts a growing Hispanic community and outstanding Hispanic-owned businesses.)

“Coco” is set in the Mexican city of Santa Cecilia and follows the story of 12-year-old Miguel Rivera, an aspiring musician who must find a way back home when he accidentally travels to the Land of the Dead. Such a good story.

Bring a chair or blanket. Maybe tissues too, in case you get all sloppy sad, slinging tears and snot.

Blending a birthday with bourbon

Back in 2012, Bill Whitlow and Molly Wellman opened two equally fine bourbon venues in MainStrasse.

Whitlow’s Goodfellas and Wiseguy Lounge, and Wellmann’s Old Kentucky Bourbon Bar both figured prominently in elevating The Cov’s bourbon aesthetic. (One might say we’re now unapologetically highfalutin’ about our bourbon.)

So … fast forward to Saturday, when Wenzel Whiskey, for which Whitlow is a brand ambassador, begins selling bottles of The One 50th Blend bourbon, in celebration of Wellmann’s 50th birthday and Wenzel’s 150th anniversary of whiskey production. It all happens at The One 50th Blend Event at Wenzel Whiskey.

There’s a limited number of bottles available for sale on Saturday, so plan wisely. Wellman herself will be there, signing bottles.
