Flying Pig, Derby & Cinco

COVINGTON, Ky. – This weekend calls for fascinators, seersucker suits, well-soled shoes, and a big thirst for margaritas.

It’s a big weekend in The Cov, what with the Flying Pig Marathon, Kentucky Derby parties, Cinco de Mayo celebrations, and more. Scroll down, see what suits you, and dress accordingly.

Flying Pig

The “best marathon in the U.S.” happens this weekend, and whether you plan to run in it, cheer on a pal who’s running in it, or simply marvel from the sidelines at those who enjoy this sort of exertion, you should know that a stretch of the Flying Pig Marathon route runs through The Cov.

With that in mind, we’re here to make you aware so you can secure a good location to watch or avoid it altogether. This trusty Flying Pig Road Closures information will serve you well. Keep in mind that closures are applicable from Friday night through early Sunday morning.

By the way, if you’re one of those dedicated runners, be sure to wave at us. We’ll be eating donuts and drinking beer on the sidelines.

Mindfully meander

Let’s say you don’t have a scintilla of interest in the Flying Pig Marathon. And while roughly 40,000 people will be participating in it, you want something on a grander scale. Something with a big mission. A big purpose. Like world peace.

Let’s say you’d prefer to walk with others across the globe to help create a wave of peaceful energy that resonates throughout the world. You can do that Saturday at The Hellmann Creative Center during the World Labyrinth Day Walk.

Not unlike the Kentucky Derby, World Labyrinth Day happens every year on the first Saturday in May, when people from around the globe participate in a moving meditation for world peace. (And this year, friends, we’ve got some walkin’ to do.)

The labyrinth, as you may well know, is an ancient meandering path that leads to a center. For more than 4,000 years folks have walked its singular path for purposes of mindfulness, mediation, and spiritual healing.

The Hellman Creative Center invites you to come walk a temporary labyrinth that they will create in their parking lot. If you’re so inclined, you can also join them for a World Labyrinth Day Workshop where you’ll create a finger labyrinth. That way the peace of mind you seek will be right in the palm of your hand (where it’s really been all along).

Got a couple of minutes?

Known as “the fastest two minutes in sports,” the 150th Kentucky Derby happens Saturday and you’ll find plenty of places to watch it right here in The Cov.

As always, we preface this list with an apology to any Derby event we’ve missed, and ask you to please be so kind as to share others in the comments section when we post this on social media. Okay, here goes:

There’s the … 150th Kentucky Derby Party at Braxton Brewing Company …  Derby Day Draft Debauchery at Old Towne Tavern … Run for the Roses Ky Derby Party at Juniper’s … Derby Day at Knowledge Bar & Social Room … Derby Day at The Opening of Firehouse Ladder No. 2 and Covington Yard  … Derby Day Watch Party at Smoke Justis … Happy Hour Networking Post Derby Party at Second Story … Derby Watching and Tequila Mint Juleps at Zapata Cantina … and The Old Kentucky Bourbon Bar Turns 12 combines the bar’s 12th anniversary party with Derby Day, just like they celebrated their opening day 12 years ago.

Have fun and win big.

Judy, Gene & H-wood’s golden age

Queen City Cabaret and The Carnegie team up to celebrate 100 years of the legendary film studio, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Lights, Camera, Cabaret! 100 Years of MGM at The Carnegie on Saturday night will take audiences through a hit parade of songs from Hollywood’s golden age made popular by the likes of Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, Mickey Rooney, and more.

Plant some Hope

The 1st annual Spring Planting and Beautification Day at the Garden of Hope on Saturday looks to bring volunteers from Peaselburg and throughout Northern Kentucky to help beautify a unique little place in their neighborhood.

If  you’re not familiar with this gem, the Garden of Hope is located on a hilltop in the Peaselburg neighborhood and came about because of a visit that Reverend Morris H. Coers, pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church, made to the Holy Land in 1938. It was his intention that the Garden of Hope give others a glimpse of the sites he visited while there.

It includes a 45-foot by 22-foot replica of Jesus’ tomb, a statue of Jesus replicating his Sermon on the Mount, a 30-foot cross, and a carpenter’s shop surrounded by beautiful gardens. You can lend a hand and help keep the gardens that way.

Cinco Sunday

Depending on how Saturday went for you (Small losses/big wins? Set a record time on your run? Feeling pretty mellow after walking slowly in a big circle?), you may well be down for a little Sunday fun, er, should we say, Cinco de Mayo celebration?

You’ll find a good time (and good tacos and tequila) at Zapata Cantina’s Cinco De Drinko (where they’ll have a tequila-infused Mint Julep), Gypsy’s  Origin Trade Goods & Moonbeam Pop-Up and Cinco @ Olla.
