Fishing Derby & Memorial Day weekend

COVINGTON, Ky. – It’s a long holiday weekend ahead and there will be cookouts, parties, and lots of fun.

But let’s not forget why we have this long weekend. Memorial Day weekend is a time of remembrance, a time to pay tribute to the women and men who died while serving in this nation’s military.  Here in The Cov, you can join others in honoring Covington’s fallen at the annual Memorial Day Parade and numerous ceremonies on Monday, and a weekend-long one at The Roost Latonia.

You might also want to go fishing with your kids, listen to live music, make crafts, and sip beneath the moon. Summer is right around the corner.

Mystical moon & celestial elixirs

You’ll step into a world of mystical wonders at Creative House of Art & Design’s (CHAD) Full Moon Fest tonight.

Uncover the path ahead of you with a $5 tarot reading, or turn your palms up to a talented mystic. Odds are the tarot reader and the mystic will each see a tasty libation in your future because skilled mixologists will be blending a little magic of their own in CHAD’s Secret Bar.

Cocktails will be inspired by the astrological placement of May’s Full Flower Moon, so named by Native American tribes because this is when flowers emerge across the country. This full moon happens to be in Sagittarius, a fire sign, so maybe you’ll find yourself sipping a fiery absinthe planning a little adventure.

Show your colors

The Roost Latonia invites y’all to a weekend of creativity and remembrance.

Color Us Red, White & Blue happens Friday and Saturday and will honor our fallen heroes with some good ol’ fashioned arts and crafts.

You’ll create canvas hearts for military families, handcraft poppies, and put together beautiful cemetery bouquets. You’ll likely work up an appetite, so The Roost will serve up some tasty slices of ‘Merica pie (Perhaps while the 1971 Don McLean song plays).

Rods, reels, and kiddos

If you want to see a smile spread across a kid’s face, just put a fishing pole in his or her hand and watch what happens when that first fish tugs on the other end. You’ll be smiling too.

Family fishing fun happens on Saturday at Covington Parks and Recreations’ annual Youth Fishing Derby at Prisoners Lake in Devou Park for kids ages 5 to 15. Attendance generally runs high for this event, with as many as 100 kids attending in previous years, so it’s a good thing the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources regularly stocks Prisoners Lake.

Prizes will be given for longest, shortest, heaviest and most caught fish.

Families should bring their own fishing poles, tackle and bait, although a limited amount will be available for rent to those who reserve them.

Patriotic luminaries

With the holiday weekend in remembrance of those who gave all in military service, the Patriotic Luminaries workshop at Kenton County Public Library on Saturday will show you how to make a patriotic display for the weekend.

They’ll have multiple pre-designed images (or you can easily customize your own), and they’ll utilize a frosted tumbler and fairy lights for the luminaries. The  tumbler without the lights can be an actual drinkware item. If  you have a particular patriotic image you would like to include in the design, don’t forget to bring it on a flash drive, or email it to the programmer the day of the event.

A frosty 3rd birthday

Frosthaus wants you to join them in celebration three years of all their “dreamsicles” coming true.

On Saturday they’re throwing a big ol’ block party with their Frosthaus 3rd Birthday Summer Kickoff Party. There’s going to giant Jenga, Connect Four, cornhole, live music, and prizes and drink deals.

A spicy Sunday

What do you say you spice things up this Sunday?

You can lounge on the couch all morning, but by afternoon get yourself to Braxton Brewing Company for Salsa Sunday on the Rooftop. An instructor from KamaSalsa Latin Dancing will be on hand to show how to make all those energetic moves.

No experience necessary, just a hankering for fun. Event is free and open to all ages.
