COVINGTON, Ky. – If you have a dog, want a dog, or merely have a genuine appreciation of dogs, then you’ll find fun and meaningful events to enjoy this weekend.
There are also events related to Marvel comic’s superheroes, really bad movies, Zach Bryan’s music, potlucks, and an opportunity to help local youth … not to mention the usual array of cool live music, the farmers market, and more.
Do you know Magneto’s real name? Which X-Man can charge animate and inanimate objects with kinetic energy? Who has blue fur and a tail and can teleport himself?
If those questions are all too easy, a veritable insult to your vast knowledge of Marvel super heroes, then you might want to show off at the Kenton County Public Library’s Marvel Trivia: X-Men and Avengers game tonight.
They’ll be covering topics from Marvel films to comics, from the X-Men to the Avengers. There might even be a prize in it.
As is the case with all bad movies, there’s always popcorn.
Here’s an opportunity to not only join others to watch a bad movie but also help film a bad movie at Pique’s gallery’s Bad Movie Club: Champ Against Champ tonight.
Champ Against Champ stars Dragon Lee in a martial arts epic (that is apparently epically bad), about a young fighter on the losing side of a battle with nemesis Hell Lord. When the fighter is seriously wounded, a young woman encourages Dragon to train, “especially in the 18 Kicking Styles.”
After some bad flick inspiration, you can make your film debut, because the folks at Pique are seeking volunteers to help act in or film their own bad movie. (Ready for your close-up?)
You probably own a dozen or so white t-shirts, so why not get creative and change one or two up with some all-natural indigo dye?
Art Equals is hosting an Indigo Dye Party at the Hellmann Creative Center on Friday, and they’ll show you how to use the same beautiful blue dye that’s used in your favorite denim blue jeans to transform the item of your choice. The dye, tools, and support will be provided. Just bring your own materials (and a potluck dish --- don’t forget the vittles).
Keep in mind that natural materials like 100% cotton, linen, wool, or silk do best. In addition to transforming a cool piece of clothing or some other item, you’ll learn about Shibori, a Japanese style of resist dying that involves folding the fabric.
When country musician Zach Bryan announced Larry’s All-American Café as one of 23 bars across the country (and the only one in Kentucky) selected for the targeted release of his new album, our first thought was this: “Sure enough, he’s heard about Larry’s amazing tater tots.”
Larry’s is playing Bryan’s new album – called “Great American Bar Scene” – all week long, and they’ve added a bunch of other fun stuff like Friday night’s Zach Bryan “Look-Alike” Contest and Saturday’s Great American Bar Scene Block Party.
Inquiring minds want to know: Will Bryan himself show up for this big hullabaloo in his honor? Maybe hijack his own look-alike award? Guess you’ll have to go to know.
Maybe you’re already familiar with the Stray Animal Adoption Program (SAAP), the all-volunteer nonprofit in Northern Kentucky that exists to rescue, foster, protect, and provide care for at-risk dogs and cats until they find a home for them. Perhaps you’ve seen people driving around with SAAP’s paw-shaped magnets on the back of their car, proclaiming their good fortune for having found their new best friend through the rescue.
The folks over at Frosthaus like the work SAAP does, and if you do too then you – and your “fur baby” – should stop in Saturday for the Haus Pawty Supporting SAAP.
There’s going to be a photographer on site for photos (for a donation to SAAP), costume contests, Tito’s giveaways (Tito’s will donate $1 from every “Muttslide” beverage to SAAP), and more.
Bronson Arroyo, Wallace Woods, and The Weathered Feather will take the stage at Saturday’s Cover Lover Benefit for Homeward Bound Shelter at Madison Live, but the real headliner is the work of the shelter.
The Brighton Center’s Homeward Bound Shelter is a 24-hour emergency shelter located in The Cov that provides a safe place and residential treatment services for runaway, homeless, abused, neglected, and dependent youth from ages 11-17. It’s the only direct access emergency shelter for youth under 18 in Northern Kentucky. All proceeds from the event will support the shelter’s efforts. So rock on and do some good.
Since the 4th of July falls on a Thursday next week, Covington Parks & Rec’s Independence Day Dog Parade will happen on Sunday … and the patriotic tail-waggin’ fervor will be strong.
Let’s admit it, an event like this is fun for participants and spectators alike because of holiday-themed dog accessories. Dogs seem to be proud to wear red, white and blue and stars and stripes, and humans sure get a kick out of seeing dogs wear them.
There will be prizes for the most patriotic dogs, so if you’re plan to participate, get that outfit in order.
