Parrot Heads, planets & goodbye ‘Big Boy’

COVINGTON, Ky. – And just like that, we’re in the last week of July. Why the hurry, summer?

At least here in The Cov, there are a lot of good things to do throughout July’s final weekend, such as … gazing at the night sky, perusing cool art, shopping local vendors, partying with Parrot Heads, sampling spicy local-made sauces, listening to live music, and sipping wine in honor of a big hairy gentleman. So many good choices.

Sip gin & shop local

Tonight’s Summer Market at Juniper’s features 10 local vendors with an eclectic array of goods, including jewelry, plants, caramels, hot sauce, baked goods, art, and more.

So get the weekend off to a great start with a chilly drink and some unique goods.

Farewell, ‘Big Boy’

If you’ve ever strolled into Crafts & Vines for a sip or two of wine, you’ve likely met Philip and admired his curly coiffure, well-manured demeanor, that undeniable smile, and his signature tuxedo.

And if you’re a Crafts & Vines regular, you’re likely crying in your cabernet right now because you know that Philip, aka “Big Boy,” a canine of urban sophistication, is moving across that wide river to … (gulp) … the suburbs.

Don’t miss the chance to bid Philip a fond farewell and toast your best wishes to his (and his human’s) next best chapter on Friday at The “Big Boy” is Movin’ To The Burbs at Crafts & Vines. Bring your pups, so they can wave a paw too, just like Lassie did at the end of each show in her television series (insert tear emoji here).

Life in the abstract

Benjamin Cook is a Cincinnati-based artist and educator who explores the movement of images, presented in various formats, each directly or indirectly filtered through an online AI product-rendering program. You can see it for yourself on Friday at Translations/Transitions. Closing Event. at Pique gallery.

The collection points to the abstract translation that occurs between objects, centering relationships between manual and algorithmic methods of image translation. The works reveal the multidirectional flow of input/output data through the losses and gains of material and visual information.

Partying Parrot Heads (Is there any other kind?)

With a willing suspension of disbelief, you’ll feel like you’re in the Florida Keys on Saturday when the Frosthaus morphs into Margaritaville for its Parrot Party at Frosthaus.

Expect live music and giveaways at what will be an epic block party, Parrot Head style, as the spirit of Jimmy Buffet lives on.

From brands to band

Here’s an event that debunks myths.

First, that accountants and engineers can’t play music. And second, that Procter & Gamble is known solely for the trusted brands it produces, like Pampers, Febreze, Vicks, Downy, Dawn, and Charmin.

As it turns out, Procter & Gamble is also known for the talented musicians on its staff, and among them are accountants and engineers. You can see and hear for yourself on Saturday at Covington Parks and Rec’s Concert in the Park Featuring the P&G Big Band at the Devou Park Bandshell.

The Procter & Gamble Big Band is a 20-member ensemble made up entirely of P&G employees and retirees, and they’ve been playing for company functions and community concerts throughout the region since 1987. Originally named “Mr. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” to honor then-president John Pepper, the band was formed to perform music for a company show and wound up staying together. Because they’re so good, they now perform throughout the region.

A saucy Sunday

Origin Trade Goods is a Covington-based business built on the powerful magic of food, friendship, and community – not to mention a philosophy embodied in the quote from an anonymous “wise chef” it mentions on its website: “An ounce of sauce can cover a multitude of sins.”

Odds are that Moonbeam, which makes sauces in small batches and is also located in The Cov, agrees with that statement.

If you like your weekends fiery, you’ll want to get Sunday’s Brunch at Gypsy’s with Origin Trade Goods and Moonbeam on your calendar. OTG will serve up rosemary gruyére biscuits with andouille sausage, and Moonbeam is doing a Bloody Mary flight.

Seeking Skat w/i Aquarius

Covington Parks and Rec will bring its magnificent telescope to Austinburg Park on Sunday for Astronomy Night.

Plan to gaze at the stars and planets. And if the night sky cooperates, you might see the Delta Aquariids Meteor Shower, which lasts through Aug. 21 (with this weekend presenting the best time to see it). Young stargazers will know that to get a good glimpse, they’ll need to look for the star called Skat in the constellation of Aquarius.
