Swing music, wet dogs, & J-strokes

COVINGTON, Ky. – It’s hot … summer break is winding down for parents of school-age children (thank goodness) … political campaigns are shifting into Ludicrous Speed (points for the Spaceballs reference) … and the Olympics Games has us all thinking we know more (and can do more) than we actually do (and can). You know, glory days (more points, a la The Boss).

But if you need a break from all that, we have an incredibly eclectic array of offerings this weekend in The Cov. Read on:

Benoit Blanc (at Covington Plaza)

Sure, you could stay home and watch Netflix, but think about how much more fun it would be to go watch a sleek, madcap round of cat and mouse play out on screen, down by the river.

Knives Out | Presented by NightLight at Covington Plaza tonight features one of the best murder mystery films – an old-fashioned whodunit, with old-school cinematic suspense and entertainment, and a plan that’s “a doughnut hole in the doughnut’s hole.”

Tickets often sell out in advance (so we’re leery of even mentioning it). But .. there’s also a link to future shows, so even if you can’t get in tonight, perhaps something else will interest you.

Swing it!

The Kentucky Symphony Orchestra is bringing 1990s swing revival and 2020s electro swing together on Saturday, featuring the sounds of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Squirrel Nut Zippers, and Royal Crown Revue. It’s Get Movin’ (Feet Don’t Fail Me Now) at the Devou Park Bandshell.

Plus, they’ll add a European touch to the evening, with the sounds of Cut Capers, Caro Emerald, Atom Smith, and more.

You can drive to Devou, but there’s also going to be a TANK Shuttle Bus departing every half hour from Covington Catholic High School on Dixie Highway, starting at 6 p.m. through 7:30 p.m. Cost is $1 each way. Chairs and coolers are allowed on the bus.

Water dogs

Dogs love water. They love drinking it, swimming in the local pond, and running through the hose.

So on Sunday, Covington Parks & Rec is shutting down the Latonia Water Park & Splash Pad to humans and giving the City’s canines the run of the place (well, humans will have to be there to chaperone their pets).

Pups at the Pool is an annual event that used to be held at Goebel Pool (but that pool was closed due to the need for massive repairs and the coming bridge project.)

So help your dog cool down, grab some of the treats being offered, and snag a Parks & Rec bandana. All the cool dogs have one.

Cram the Cruiser

No, this isn’t some weird telephone booth stuffing contest. It’s a fund drive of sorts, where Covington Police officers are collecting school supplies at the Latonia Kroger for distribution on Aug. 15. It’s easy: Make a purchase at the store, then drop off at the table.

Come say “hi” to some of Covington’s men and women in blue while being generous. Cram the Cruiser School Supply Drive happens Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

FUNduro

The FUNduro Race Series uses the enduro mountain bike style of racing where racers ride largely technical downhill stages to get their total race time. Pedaling to transfer stations aren’t times. Stages are timed from a start point to a finish point, using an industry-leading Sportident air plus timing.

It should come as no surprise that one of the series’ events happens at Devou Park.

The Devou Frienduro presented by Hueber Homes takes place Sunday at Devou Park Trails, Race 4 of 6 of the FUNDURO Series.

You’ll find primitive camping available at the Ludlow Bromley Swim Club, which has access to a pool, showers, and restrooms.

37th time for Old Timers

The 32nd Annual Old Timers Reunion centered at Randolph Park will take place this weekend, and by weekend we mean all weekend.

The yearly festival is the event-of-the-year for many families in Covington’s Eastside neighborhood, bringing relatives from across the United States back home for music, food, and sporting events. (But we’re betting that if you planned to go to Old Timers, you already knew all this anyway.)

Hours are 3 p.m.-11 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. - 11 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday., and some local streets will be closed.

J-strokes & more

Regardless of whether you wield a 19-oz Bending Branches bent-shaft Sun Shadow (butternut, cherry, basswood, and black willow) or a yard-sale special that feels like a crowbar, the Ohio River Paddlefest is a fun event. After all, they shut down 9 miles of river so canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards can make a lazy float along La Belle Riviere’s current.

And even if you’re not paddling in the thick of it on Saturday, wake up early and witness this colorful 2,000-participant sight (from either the riverfront or somewhere with a view). You’ll be tempted to take pictures.

Paddlefest – which also is a fundraiser for a non-profit that provides outdoor recreation opportunities to urban teens – is deemed the nation’s largest paddling event.

It’s not too late to register. Racers start at 7 a.m. from the Schmidt Recreation Complex in Cincinnati. Recreational paddles start not long thereafter.
