A neighborhood walk, art & Shakespeare

COVINGTON, Ky. – Not sure what to do with your weekend? Let us quell your uncertainty by presenting an array of entertaining possibilities in The Cov.

Calling all bookworms

To make sure kiddos have the necessary essentials for school, Covington Police Officers will be at Meinken Field tonight for their annual Covington PD Bookworms Goes Back To School event.

Officers will hand out backpacks filled with plenty of school supplies for residents of Covington, or those whose children attend a school in Covington. The event is free and will feature games, free reading and activity books, and a whole lot of fun for all who attend.

An informed stroll

Stunning views, bronze sculptures of historical figures (like Lady Riverboat Captain Mary Becker Green, anti-slavery advocate James Bradley, and artist John James Audubon), and Italianate, Federal-style, and Bungalow/Craftsman architecture featured in historic homes along the Ohio and Licking rivers. We’re talking about none other than the historic Covington gem that is The Historic Licking Riverside Neighborhood.

If you’ve ever wanted to take a stroll through the neighborhood and learn more about its history, here’s your chance. Covington Parks and Recreation’s Covington Historic Walking Tour on Saturday is a free event and will be sure to inform and entertain.

Transformative talk

If you haven’t taken in the current “Suspended Between Forms” exhibit at The Carnegie, make a point to check it out Saturday before it leaves the gallery.

In fact, a perfect time to visit would be for The Carnegie’s panel discussion, A Conversation with Sergio Aguillon-Mata and Elese Daniel, led by Manuel Iris which will speak to the exhibition’s themes, ideas, and works.

Writer Zito Madu curated “Suspended Between Forms,” an exhibition of objects and installations that explore transformation represented in a variety of media. Madu’s realist memoir, “The Minotaur at Calle Lanza,” serves as a jumping-off point to examine psychological and physical labyrinths, mirroring, and personal universal mythologies and the changes we undergo to navigate these scenarios. Change, after all, can be terrifying, thrilling, arduous, abrupt, joyous, satisfying, long-overdue, and a litany of other adjectives … so it makes sense that it spurs thoughtful art.

(Side note: Panelist/artist Elese Daniel spent time in Covington this summer engaging with City and community leaders about building capacity for climate action. She is brilliantly talented, so don’t miss out on this panel discussion.)

You’ll want to enroll in an art class

Baker Hunt Art and Cultural Center’s annual Student Art Show on Sunday is something to behold and will encourage you to at long last make art. So … while the event is entertaining, it also can be a motivator.

You will be duly impressed with the creativity and skill that result from the Baker Hunt teaching staff’s tutelage. If you follow Covington center on social media, then you’ve already had a glimpse of what we’re talking about. Pretty cool, right? Stained glass, watercolors, pastels – whatever the medium – Baker Hunt students are producing stunning art.

Prizes will be awarded for each medium, as well as Best of Show, and winners will be displayed in the Center’s ballroom up through Baker Hunt’s Twilight at the Carnival event on Sept.14 (another great event to look forward to).

The rotten state of Denmark …

Covington Parks & Rec brings you Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s Shakespeare in the Park: Hamlet at the Devou Park Bandshell on Sunday.

Odds are you don’t even realize the number of times you reference the play’s melancholic Prince of Denmark in your daily discourse.

For instance, how many times have you called out someone’s insincerity with “thou doth protest too much?” Or reflected, “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so?”

Prolific timeless wisdom from The Bard. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy this classic.
