COVINGTON, Ky. – As always, there is something for everyone to enjoy in The Cov this weekend.
Seeking self-discovery? Got you covered. Want to immerse in original, local art? There’s a cool new exhibit you’ll want to see. Have a thirst for a new brew? You’re in luck. Looking to replace a demure weekend brunch with a little “Hips Don’t Lie” motion around the table before you dine? Start loosening up. How about a swim in the Ohio River? Yep, you can do that too.
Scroll away and make a plan for good times in The Cov this weekend.
Were you aware that there’s something called The Center for Generational Kinetics that’s dedicated to studying generations and their behaviors? Neither did we, but composing this weekend newsletter often calls for the kind of dogged research generally reserved for a Ph.D candidate. (Editor’s note: Ugh, not entirely true.)
Anyway, the Center for Generational Kinetics works to identify what shapes a generation: Characteristics … thought processes … expectations … preferences … and where respective generations are heading in both the near and long-term future.
Regardless of your birth cohort – Baby Boomer, Gen X, Millennial, or Gen Z – you should make your way to tonight’s art exhibit at Pique: Geriatric Millennial Quadragenarian. Work by Antonio Adams, because we believe that all generations appreciate art. (Oh, and we’ll save you some keyboard clicking: A “quadragenarian” is someone in their 40s. Yep, we had to look that one up too.)
Not only will you see really cool art at this free event but you’ll also be part of Antonio’s birthday celebration. Wish him a good one.
Wondering what’s in the cards for you? Well, only you know the answer, and here’s a workshop that can help you get to the bottom of it.
The transformative SoulCollage® Session at Purple Paisley, Local Artisan Shop on Saturday will guide you toward self-discovery by delving into your innermost world and expressing your true self through the creative method of SoulCollage®. It’s an intuitive collage process that uses images (from magazines, special photos, old calendars, etc.) to create a deck of cards that are essentially the story of you. And if your story played out in cards has lately felt like a game of 52 pick-up, then you’ll definitely want to participate in this workshop.
Facilitator Tara Lynn Pugh, who is an artist, teaching artist, and self-described “introverted outsider” from Cincinnati, will lead you through this expressive art practice that aims to heighten your self-awareness and creativity.
Shine your stein and squeeze into your lederhosen because Oktoberfest brew has arrived … as in Braxton Brewing Co.’s Limited Seasonal Release of their 100% authentic German Lager, Oktober Fuel. Fun times, and fun beer, indeed.
Oktoberfest Biergarten in the Taproom! happens on Saturday at Braxton Brewing. Expect it to be the “greatest Braxton Biergarten celebration” their taproom has ever seen. Since all the others were pretty outstanding, we can’t imagine what’s in store, but, hey, Prost to tradition.
There’s a festival for that, but it’s big on fun for the entire family.
Saturday’s August Mini Fest at Austinburg Park is the end-of-the-summer celebration you’ve been waiting for, and it’s a free event.
Covington Parks and Rec, Read Ready Covington, the Kenton County Public Library, and the Housing Authority of Covington are bringing good times and cool stuff for the day, like a Library on Wheels, a balloon artist, Harley’s Hotdogs, Kona Ice, music, crafts, and more.
Saturday’s Greater Cincinnati Guitar Society Summer Picnic and Open Mic at the Devou Park Bandshell invites you to join in on musical good times with guitar-playing friends.
Pizza and water will be provided, but feel free to bring a side item to share. This is a family-friendly event that features outdoor yard games and a guitar-themed kids craft table. All are welcome, tickets are not necessary.
If Torri, Regan, Kate, and Katie have you feeling all inspired, then you’re likely headed to the Great Ohio River Swim on Sunday for the only open water swim across that somewhat-scary body of water.
The Great Ohio River Swim benefits Adventure Crew, a local nonprofit that gives city teens the opportunity to step out of their comfort zone and get outdoors and inside a kayak, on a nature trail, in a tent, and more, as well as learn about conservation and ecology – some very worthwhile and impactful stuff. The nonprofit serves all Cincinnati public schools and six schools in Northern Kentucky, among them Holmes High School.
On Sunday, participants will enter the Ohio River at the Serpentine Wall in Cincinnati, then swim to the Kentucky side of the river and back, which is roughly 900 meters. The river will be closed to motorized traffic during the event, and on-water safety will be provided by the Coast Guard and local law enforcement.
Belly & Brunch on Sunday at The Roost Latonia is going to start out with gentle stretches that warm up to some basic belly dance movement techniques, then segue into a short choreography for about an hour and a half.
Once you’ve stretched, shimmied, and strengthened your core (maybe with a bit of Shakira flare), fill that hardworking belly with some sustenance.
