Pops, junk & fireworks

COVINGTON, Ky. – If you’re sticking around town this Labor Day Weekend – as opposed to venturing out into what dang near every news outlet says will be record crowds at airports and on interstates – there’s no need to feel let down. There is plenty to do right here in The Cov.

And we’re not only talking about the 48th annual Western & Southern/WEBN fireworks on Sunday evening: There’s a whole lot of other cool stuff to do before the sky lights up above the Ohio River.

Put some junk in your trunk

You know that old saying, “one person’s junk is another’s treasure?” Well, you’re about to see the truth in those words when you find some real gems at The Roost Latonia’s She Gotta Lotta Junk In Her Trunk Sale that started this afternoon and runs throughout Labor Day weekend.

We’re talking 50 percent off the whole store (and you know the kind of fabulous heap o’ vintage treasures that fill The Roost’s shelves).

Hey, pops

On Saturday, the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra taps into a veritable treasure trove of the classic and novelty numbers that fostered a universal popularity for symphonic gatherings, known as “pops,” as they present POPS, Inc. at the Devou Park Bandshell.

Credit Boston Pops conductor Arthur Fieldler for the moniker because he began playing and recording these short, peppy standards in the late 1930s through the 1970s. Lead pops writers of the era were Henry Mancini, Richard Hayman, and Leroy Anderson.

Still don’t know what we’re talking about? Think the theme to “The Pink Panther,” “Moon River,” “Bugler’s Holiday,” and “Waltzing Cat” … but expect to find it a challenge not to get up and dance.

Mark it with your art

Ever see those “bookmark alignment charts” that place you in categories based on how you mark your place where you left off in whatever magnificent tome you’re reading? (A la book ribbons are “lawful good” … leaves and TP are “chaotic neutral” … laying the book face down is “neutral evil” … while dog-earing the book is downright “chaotic evil.”)

Purple Paisley, Local Artisan Shop’s Creative Bookmark Making Class on Saturday will present you with all the tools you need to join the “true neutral” category by creating a proper bookmark: a variety of bookmark cardstocks, templates, water color brush pens, gel pens, markers, colored pencils, and stencils to help you craft your unique and personalized bookmark.

Local artist Emily Rose will be on hand to show you how it’s done.

Riverfest

The 48th annual Western & Southern/WEBN Fireworks happens on Sunday, and, while we might think the best place to watch the night sky light up is from the comfort of your couch, you might think otherwise.

So, if you want to gather at the river or up in Devou Park with throngs of people, here’s some reliable information about street closings, safety, and parking in The Cov.

Have fun. Be safe. Be smart.
