COVINGTON, Ky. – Happy Halloween, Samhain, Hallow’s Eve, Celtic New Year, All Souls Night.
The children, for sure, are going to come knockin’ tonight. As for adults, you’ll no doubt be finding all kinds of ways to bid farewell to the month that gives you permission to binge horror flicks, not realizing that horror isn’t seasonal (as the months-long barrage of political ads prove).
With that in mind, you’ll be happy to know that there’s a lot more to do than sit around and eat leftover candy this weekend. In The Cov, we’ve got loads of live music, a wine tasting, maybe a little bingo, a book and maker fair, Olla Cov’s annual Dia de los Muertos Celebration, and more.
Scroll through and make plans … but make sure you then get your candy in order, because your doorbell is going to start ringing in 3, 2, 1 …
Gone are the days when an adult could stay home and give out candy or accompany a trick-or-treating child on Halloween without the all-consuming fear of being gutted by a dang maniacal clown or ghoul. You walk back to the kitchen to get more candy and … wait, is there a knife missing from the cutting block? Fall too far behind the rest of the trick-or-treaters and … is that a red balloon floating above a lamppost? And heaven forbid someone asks you to babysit.
Tonight’s Trick or Treat in The Cov will likely bring swarms of princesses, cartoon characters, monsters, aliens, zombies, vampires, and ghosts to your door. Extend handfuls of candy to them, so that you’re not rationalizing the hundreds of candy bars you’ll eat for weeks (“But they’re miniatures.”).
Be safe, have fun, keep an eye out for Art, Pennywise, Twisty, Shivers, and others. And if you are babysitting tonight, keep the lights on, the doors locked, and your cell phone close by, because, well, we all know how that plays out in the movies.
Curl Up with All Your Favorites Book & Maker Fair at The Roost Latonia on Saturday is a day filled with literary delights and creative wonders.
Bookworms are invited to come cozy up with their favorite book (or discover new favorites), while makers are encouraged to come explore creations from talented artisans and crafters. There’s also a vendor fair, where you can shop for distinctive gifts like homemade crafts and vintage treasures.
Delectable nibbles and fresh coffee brews will be available to satisfy your cravings.
Olla Cov is hosting a neighborhood Dia de los Muertos Celebration on Saturday, a rich cultural festival that honors the lives of loved ones who have passed but in an anything-but-somber way.
Instead, Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, blends indigenous customs with Catholic influences to create a unique event that celebrates life, memories, and connections.
Expect to enjoy live music, authentic food and drinks, face painting, local vendors, and traditional dancers representing multiple countries. Plus, Artmarkit -- The Cov’s newest creative hub which happens to be right next door to Olla Cov – will join in on the celebration with its community craft table where you’ll make marigolds out of coffee filters and paint traditional calaveras (skull) masks. Get creative inspiration from the paper-mache calaveras masks made by Holmes Middle School students on display at Artmarkit.
Absent all the British monarchy stuffiness, Saturday’s Queen City Gala: Coronation 33 Pop Art!, at the Radisson Hotel will be a royally good time that actually does a lot of good.
