COVINGTON, Ky. – This weekend there’s a much-needed Women’s Fest, holiday shopping to commence with, a lot to learn about fibers, dogs to run with, art to learn about, lots of live music, perfume to make, wine to taste, and more.
Who couldn’t benefit from a presentation called “Healing Her Soul,” or “Hypnotherapy for Anxiety & Depression” right about now? How about “Bad A$$ Manifestation?”
To celebrate its new expansion at 124 W. Pike St., (which is a very cool space), soHza sister Boutique is hosting a four-day grand opening Women’s Fest, starting tonight and running through Sunday, where you can hear from fascinating women on the above-mentioned topics and more.
soHza sister launched back in 2013, with three sisters coming together with the belief in the power of women and an idea that they could help bring them together for change. They created a social enterprise dedicated to help women locally and globally. When you purchase their fair trade inventory, they donate to a local non-profit for women. To date, they’ve given more than $40,000 to local non-profit partners and purchased $1 million with global partners.
Tonight’s event features live music by Josie & Lauren, and throughout the weekend you can stop in and meet changemaker women leaders and advocates, see the new fall clothing and jewelry launch, meet some of the women who make their merchandise, listen to more live music, enjoy a “Brunch with a Purpose” on Sunday, and delve into some interesting self-healing information.
Nothing quite speaks to the spirit of the season like the burning desire to get your holiday shopping out of the way.
On Saturday, two local businesses invite you to stop in and make some progress on your gift list, and have a good bit of fun while you’re at it. You’ll beat the holiday shopping rush, hear live music, enjoy a refreshment, and support local artists and business.
You can start decking the halls early when you Jingle All The Way to Latonia for décor, floral arrangements, vintage treasures, and unique gifts at The Roost Latonia.
Looking for local made art and jewelry? Check out the November Prelude-Pre Holiday Bazaar at Purple Paisley, Local Artisan Shop.
Maybe it’s the warm (balmy, smoldering, sweat wringing) climate that draws us to visit the South, but other things about the region have long drawn our curiosity.
On Saturday, the Curator Tour with Sso-Rha Kang at The Carnegie ventures into Southern Democratic, a featured project in the 2024 FotoFocus Biennial: backstories, where you can delve into themes, concepts, and selected works from the exhibit.
Southern Democratic opened at The Carnegie back in September, and maybe you’ve already visited, but having Kang lead you through the exhibit, with an informed discussion, will surely elevate the experience.
Here’s what you’ll see and talk about: Back in October 1976, mere weeks before the Nov. 2 presidential election between Democratic candidate Jimmy Carter and Republican candidate Gerald Ford, Rolling Stone magazine tasked photographer William Eggleston with documenting Carter’s birthplace of Plains, Ga. Thing is, they never published his images. But a year later, 100 original prints from the assignment were published in two leather-bound volumes, revealing a small southern town that was starkly different from the media’s idealized version of Carter’s hometown.
Nearly 50 years later , we’re still curious about the concepts of place and life in the South.
The third annual Art Equals Woolly Fest is on Sunday at the Hellmann Creative Center featuring hand spinners, dyers, weaving, knitting & crocheting, all in an effort to support local creators – from the farmers who raise the sheep that produce beautiful fleece, to those who use all range of fiber materials to create exceptional textiles and handicrafts.
Come together to connect, learn, share, and be inspired by all things woolly and creative. You don’t have to be a skilled knitter, weaver, or dyer to enjoy the day.
Partake in a Fluff & Stuff Exchange, where you’ll create mini fiber treasures and trade them with other fiber enthusiasts, or peruse the array of vendors that include: 2 Point Farm Alpacas, abbidid, All Wrapped Up LLC, Bracelets for PRIDEco, Chellartz, Coates & C., Fiberculture, Flora’s Fiber Farrago, Free Radical Fibers, Homemade, KVS Handcrafts, Laughing Cat Fibers, Magpie and Molly, McCrafty Fiber Hustle, Nocteniche Handmade LLC, Roebling Books & Coffee, and Tasteeteas.
Whether your goal is 5,000 steps a day or 10,000 steps (or maybe a brisk 100 steps back and forth from the couch to your kitchen), odds are that you, like many folks, are looking to get extra steps. If you also happen to love dogs, then here’s the perfect event for you.
Turns out the Kenton County Animal Shelter invites runners to join them each Sunday to get extra steps in while giving shelter dogs a much-needed break from their kennels. The dogs have widely different activity levels, most preferring short runs or walks, so no one expects you to get in long mileage runs. Running with the Dogs is just a nice Sunday afternoon stroll with a good boy or good girl.
