(Evil) Spider-Man, rural stories & MLK

COVINGTON, Ky. – Welcome, long weekend.

If you’re looking for things to do, we have a few ideas.

There’s a creepy Spider-man flick, a literary event, lots of cool live music, art to make, a food tour, a program for kiddos, and more.

We’ve included Monday in this weekend’s newsletter because Jan. 20 is a national holiday to honor the legacy of civil rights icon Martin Luther King, Jr., and there are a couple of fine events happening in recognition of him that shouldn’t be missed.

Weaving wicked webs

When Istanbul, Turkey comes under attack by none other than Spider-Man, the city calls on crimefighters Captain America and El Santo to come to the rescue.

That’s right, Spider-Man is the nemesis here, and he’s a far cry from the Tobey Maguire/Andrew Garfield/Tom Holland good guy version. Heck, his name isn’t even Peter Parker.

This is the Turkish Spider-Man. He’s clad in pink and green, emerged on the big screen in 1973, and he is vile. Not familiar with him? You can change that tonight.

Bad Movie Club: Turkish Spider-Man at Pique gallery is free, and you’re invited to stick around after the show and help the Pique staff make a bad film of their own.

Make way for Mario

Put the pedal to the medal while racing through real-world locations with that mustachioed roadster, Mario.

Covington Sparks – which is the Center for Great Neighborhood’s popular free Youth Program, in partnership with Sixth District Elementary School – kicks off on Saturday with Mario Kart with LevelUp Foundation. All incoming K-5 kiddos are welcome. There will be lots of games, crafts, and more. Lunch provided.

Good stories from small towns

We wrote about this event last week but it wound up being rescheduled to this Saturday. We’re just happy it wasn’t canceled altogether, because it sounds like a seriously cool event.

The Backwoods Literary Press Reading at Artmarkit, Discarded: A Rural Anthology, is free to attend and will feature 63 diverse artists with place-based relationships across 27 states.

Backwoods Literary Press is an independent publisher that is reclaiming, expanding, and documenting narratives about rural and small towns and reservations – an effort that goes a long way in preventing the erasure of histories.

To further secure your interest … there will be soup beans and cornbread available.

Breakfast honors King’s legacy

Monday of course is a federal holiday, and to honor that day and what it means, an annual event will be held Saturday in the parish hall of a small church tucked up against the Licking River floodwall in Covington’s Eastside neighborhood.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Discussion Breakfast begins at 9:30 a.m. at Church of Our Savior Parish Hall, 246 E. 10th St.

The event will serve up both breakfast and a program featuring remarks by Father John Judie titled “Racism Yesterday and Today.” Father Judie, a retired priest from the Archdiocese of Louisville, recently was doing mission work in Tanzania.

The program is free and open to everyone.

If it’s anything like previous years, the program will be followed by a dozen side conversations during which people build community, share stories, and discuss what it means to be inclusive. Those are important themes here in The Cov.

Oh … and the egg casseroles and fruit are pretty tasty too.

There's also The Children’s Theater of Cincinnati presents: Martin’s Dream at the Kenton County Public Library for kids 8 and up. It’s a one-man, interactive show that brings this historical figure to life through the power of story, speech, and song.
