Seussical, Dylan, cookies & beer

COVINGTON, Ky. – January exits and February enters with good entertainment.

From a new musical opening at The Carnegie tomorrow to a lineup of incredible local talent delivering Bob Dylan tunes for a good cause on Sunday (and all the good stuff happening in between), this is a great weekend to get out and take in seriously good fun in The Cov.

The land of green eggs and ham

Does the mere suggestion of a Dr. Seuss book have you talking in rhymes and riddles? What about a favorite character? Are you more of a Cat in the Hat person, or a Horton Hears a Who?

Seussical (the musical) opens Friday at The Carnegie, where an array of Dr. Seuss’s beloved characters take the stage in an adventure the whole family will enjoy.

The Carnegie is teaming up with the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music for this production, so you’re sure to see a great show.

Shows continue Saturday and Sunday and many subsequent weekends.

Make a V-day gift

Valentine’s Day is inching up on us, so don’t get caught without a special gift for someone (or yourself, because you’re special too, buttercup).

Be Mine, Create Yours: Valentine’s Earring Crafting Class at Purple Paisley, Local Artisan Shop on Saturday is an opportunity to get creative and make a pair of one-of-a-kind earrings.

You can choose from a range of jewelry-making techniques using a high-quality materials like Swarovski crystals, metal beads, and your choice of silver, gold, or copper metals. After you’ve made dazzling jewels, stick around to make a real gem.

Creative Note Cards for Loved Ones and Hospitalized Kids is a workshop led by local artist Emily Rose.

This workshop puts the heart in Valentine’s Day because Rose will show you how to make beautiful, personalized note cards – one for your loved one and one for the Cards for Hospitalized Kids (CFHK) charity.

CHFK spreads hope, joy, and magic to hospitalized kids across the country, distributing cards monthly and on major holidays to children’s hospitals and Ronald McDonald Houses. (Let’s all quit our day jobs and make cards for these kids.)

Is there a badge for brew pairings?

If prefer your brew with a box of cookies, then Saturday’s Girl Scout Cookie & Beer Pairing at Braxton Brewing Co. will surely satisfy.

A sleeve of Peanut Butter Patties tossed back with a Chocolate Stout and a Raspberry Hibiscus Gose to wash down some Lemonades are just a sampling of the evening’s cookie pairing flights.

It’s a self-led pairing, and by the way, there will be plenty of Girl Scout cookies available for purchase.

Big beer

Saturday’s Big Beers at West Sixth Covington Haus will feature high gravity brews, which, in case you don’t know what that means (because we sure didn’t), refers to brewing a beer with high original gravity.

High original gravity means there is ample “food” in the wort for the yeast to eat. What’s a “wort?” It’s the sugary liquid created from the malted and un-malted grains used to brew fermented beverages. Apparently, when yeast eat, they are capable of producing large amounts of alcohol. Proper aeration, nutrition, and temperature are all at play here too. High gravity equals big beer, hence the name of this soiree.

Quite frankly, understanding this process seems akin to navigating the analytical portion of the LSAT, but it’ll all about the end result: a bold and flavorful brew to enjoy.

West Sixth will have many on tap, like Kentucky Coffee Stout, Burley Barleywine, Snake Eyes Imperial Stout, Nulu Brewed Baltic Porter, Snake Cake, and more.

Covering Dylan for a good cause

If the film “A Complete Unknown” has spurred your interest in the music of Bob Dylan, then do not miss out on Positively MainStrasse: Benefit for Giving Kids Hope at The Village Theater on Sunday.

This event features an array of incredible local talent that will take the stage to celebrate Dylan’s song-writing and music in support of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital’s “Giving Hope to Kids.”

You’ll hear from artists and bands that include the likes of Dave Taylor, Noah Wotherspoon, Brent James & Friends, Heather Lynn Linville, The Mudpies, the Roger Klug Power Trio, Danny Frazier, Highway 61, Jessi Blair, Chalk Eye, the Sonny Moorman Group, Anna Applegate, Dave Hawkins, Elliot Ruther, The Village Idiots, Keith Murphy, Pete Benoit, Alex Poteet and Chris Novey, and so many more.

That’s a big lineup, but it’s for a big cause. Don’t miss it.
