COVINGTON, Ky. – This is a good weekend to get creative … feed your curiosity (and your appetite) about local history and food … see a musical … or just chill out with good live music (maybe run with some pups or do a little yoga, too).
Scroll away and find this weekend’s fun in The Cov:
Is it any wonder that quilling – an art form that involves rolling, coiling, curling, and gluing strips of paper together to create fanciful designs – saw the height of its popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries, when so-called “gentle ladies” took up the art? (The assumption being that women didn’t want to fret over the events of the day, pesky distractions like revolutions, wars, and other conflicts.)
But who’s to say that a woman spending her afternoon engaged in intricate quilling wasn’t quietly rebelling the looming industrial revolution? Each lacey scroll and coil carefully executed in silent protest of the machines that would eventually mass produce nearly everything? Perhaps they were silently seething over events of their day … but being productive while doing so.
Whatever the case, quilling is seeing a resurgence in popularity (one can pontificate all day on the timing and its significance). In fact, you --- and by “you” we mean both women and men, the stereotypical and offensive conventions of history be danged – can create something special and frilly for your sweetheart on Saturday during the Valentine’s Day Quilling Class at Purple Paisley, Local Artisan Shop.
History lessons are best remembered when combined with food, so why not partake in the MainStrasse Village Food Tour of Covington on Saturday, where you’ll learn about the history of the German immigrants who settled in Covington and the creation of the village.
Chicken and waffles, handcrafted specialty pizzas, German pretzels and beer cheese, and other local dishes will go down well when served up with insight about the village’s 100-foot tall Glockenspiel in Goebel Park, the Goose Girl Fountain, and more.
The tour begins at Cedar Restaurant and will – we posit – satisfy both mind and palate.
Grab someone you’re sweet on and take them to Artmarkit on Saturday, where you two will create a DIY Coupon book and pour your own candle.
It’s Date Night at Artmarkit, and as date nights so, this one is pretty reasonable at $30 per couple.
If venting spurs the proficiency of textile-making endeavors, then there is a good chance that Sunday’s Stitch & B*tch at Thrive Empowerment Center on Sunday could result in a prolific number of creative projects.
There must be a particular kind of satisfaction that is exclusive to the likes of weaving, felting, crochet, embroidery, knitting, batik, quilting, tapestry, fiber, sewing, lace, macramé, spinning, applique, dye, loom, rug hooking, and more. Or maybe it’s all about the gathering of like minds focusing on a piece of art. Whatever the case, this event sounds both productive and therapeutic.
The event is for all textile-arts makers. Just bring your current project and commence to create in community. There is no cost to participate, and you can drop in at any time. Donations are appreciated, as they help purchase refreshments and support empowerment programs for others who can’t afford to attend.
(If you’ve got ample material to stitch, but little by way of “b*tch,” maybe read the headlines of the day for some inspo.)
The real battle on Sunday plays out not on the turf but in the kitchen and culminates in the ultimate showdown at Gypsy’s SOUP-er Bowl Party & Competition.
Not a chili master or soup savant? Let others be the judge.
This is where Cincinnati-style chili takes on Texas Reds, White Chili, Carne Adovada, Oklahoma-style, vegetarian, and more, and a traditional chicken soup fights a protein-rich Mulligatawny, a hearty vegetable, the stalwart creamy potato, and others for the title.
The real winner, of course, is you, because you get to help choose the winner, which can only happen by serving up a healthy sampling of all. Winner takes home bragging rights and a $20 gift card.
