Vision boards, zoo animals & washcloths

COVINGTON, Ky. – Do something good for yourself this weekend.

And of course we have some ideas: Set your goals in motion with a vision board … drink beer and hang out with zoo animals … watch an artist make beads and bracelets …  learn how to crochet … listen to good music … play bingo … and more.

It’s a jungle out there

Braxton Brewing Co. is honoring the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden’s 150th anniversary in fine brewery fashion, with a new beer to celebrate the occasion: Safari Lemongrass Lager.

Saturday’s Party in the Safari at Braxton Brewing Company is going to have a special animal encounter with animals from the Cincinnati Zoo, face art for the kiddos, and live music from the Tadcasters.

As for WHICH animals? Doubtful an elephant or a giraffe, but you never know. Come find out for yourself.

Manifest magic

We all know that one person who would get into a dingy white, windowless van if the driver – though by all appearances a serial killer – said, “Hey, I know where there’s a really cool vision board-making workshop. Hop in.”

Such is the appeal of these transformative vision boards and the workshops that show you how to make a really effective one.

On Saturday, there actually is a really cool vision board workshop happening at Handy Shop + Studio. You’ll learn how to clarify your deepest desires, set intentions and craft meaningful affirmations, cultivate a mindset of magic and possibility, and create and activate a vision board that will manifest your goals.

The Vision Board Workshop will be led by Shaheen Miro, a renowned intuitive reader, astrologer, and energy alchemist. He’s also the author of “The Lunar Nomad Oracle,” “Lunar Alchemy,” “The Uncommon Tarot,” and the co-author of “Tarot for Troubled Times” (bet that one is sold out).

There’s a fee for the workshop, but that gets you a vision board canvas, an Instax Mini Photo to center yourself in vision, intention-setting prompts, tools (scissors, glue, pens, markers), a selection of magazines and inspiring materials for collaging, and an exclusive storewide discount coupon.

Creative insights

Ever wonder how artists make those intricate polymer beads? Or how they weave colorful patterned bracelets? On Saturday, local artist Melissa Mauk will show you.

Creative Insights with Artist Melissa Mauk at Purple Paisley, Local Artisan Shop will showcase Mauk’s creative processes as well as the origins of her pieces before she transforms them into one-of-a-kind works of art.

The first step (or stitch) in your fiber arts journey

The new look for 2025? The word in the fashion world is this: “fisherman aesthetic.”

The idea is to create the vibe of you on a dock in New England, poised to set sail at a moment’s notice in a weathered sailing dinghy, but back in time for cocktails on the lawn at sunset.

A staple of this “look” will be the chunky cable knit fisherman sweater, which will, of course, be in high demand and overpriced because of its newfound popularity.

You can beat the capitalistic system, however, by learning to make your own sweater. Start sensibly, though. Familiarize yourself with yarn and needles on something smaller but wildly practical, like a washcloth. You can do this Sunday at the Beginner Crochet Washcloth Workshop at Handzy Shop + Studio.

After this workshop you’ll have mastered the hieroglyphics of written patterns, the mystery of yarn skein labels, an array of crochet stitches, and more.

For a small fee, Handzy will provide the crochet hook, stitch marker, extra yarn, tapestry needle, and written pattern.
