COVINGTON, Ky. – Plenty to do in The Cov throughout this rain free (at last) weekend, like see a cool exhibit … fill a time capsule and make history … take the kiddos on an Easter egg hunt … safely recycle your old electronics… donate children’s books … meet an author … check out art by one of Kentucky’s finest artists … hear great live music .. do yoga with cats … make cool stuff in a couple of workshops … and a whole lot more.
Conjoining remnant skeins of roughly 1,000 donated hand-knit newborn hats, Shealyn Hoehn’s Exhibition “Tying Loose Ends; and Notes on String Theory,” which opens tonight at Pique gallery, was a meditative process for the artist, providing a way for coping with chronic anxiety, grief, and the daily struggles of life.
In what will be a mashup of the PBS “Antiques Roadshow” and speed dating, Saturday’s Fill a Time Capsule in front of the Latonia Branch of the Kenton County Public Library is an opportunity for every person who lives in Covington to be a part of history by submitting items to be put in a time capsule that will be placed in the Covington Central Riverfront neighborhood and opened in 2075.
Bring the item you’d like to submit for consideration (maybe aim for something that captures life in The Cov in 2025), and give a brief 10-to15-second pitch explaining why you want it included.
Former WCPO news anchor Evan Millward is the event host, and some media savvy NKU Norse Media students will be around to record a video as, one-by-one, each person makes their submittal pitch.
Norse Media will edit the video of all the pitches, put it in a video file and store it on a flash drive to put inside the time capsule. So, in a way, all submitted items are going to make it inside that time capsule, even if only via the video pitch.
The event runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
In May, the time capsule dedication will take place at the corner of Russell Street and Stewart Alley at CCR (followed by the City’s annual, very cool, Authenti-CITY and Historic Preservation Awards). Then we wait. For 50 years.
Grab your biggest basket and take the kiddos on an Easter egg hunt on Saturday.
The reality is, they won’t have to hunt too hard to find a field full of colorful Easter eggs at Covington Parks and Recreation’s annual Easter Egg Hunt at the Volpenhein Shelter in Devou Park on Saturday.
It’s going to be big fun for the whole family. There’s going to be hot dogs, popcorn, cotton candy, games (like an egg toss and an egg spoon race), drinks, a petting zoo, arts and crafts, and photos with the Easter Bunny.
How long have you been wanting to get rid of that old computer tower, but you’re mindful about keeping it out of landfills? Same with your old cellphones, tablets, a zillion old mice, monitors, desktops, laptops, VCRs, video game systems, flat screen TVs, copiers, hard drives, and more.
What to do with them?
Here’s a special recycling event where you can finally toss them all with a good conscience.
The Covington Recycles at Tech Castle event happens on Saturday. (Rain forced a reschedule from last Saturday, but if you happened to show up anyway, then you know that the team came together and made things happen, because they’re pretty darn terrific).
This Saturday’s event takes place from 9 a.m. to noon, and you’ll find more details about the long list of items they’re collecting at the link.
You’re also invited to bring gently used books to support Read Ready Covington and Tech Castle’s Little Free Library. You’ll get a ‘thank you’ coupon to shop for renewed tech at Tech Castle.
If Sunday finds you exhausted from hunting Easter eggs and hauling out electronics for recycling, then spend the afternoon at Behringer-Crawford Museum’s Driftwood: The Life of Harlan Hubbard & Harlan Hubbard: Ripple Effect Opening Reception.
There you will find calm through BCM’s extensive collection of Hubbard’s art, and meet author Jessica K. Whitehead, who will discuss her meticulously researched biography, Driftwood: The Life of Harlan Hubbard.
Hubbard’s legacy will be showcased in Harlan Hubbard: Ripple Effect, which highlights the work of Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati artists, writers, musicians, and photographers who were influenced by his original art, life, and philosophy.
The reception includes light refreshments.
